Trying to pick a winner for the Champion's trophy is kind of a lottery right now. England: Looking awful against NZ. Their top order is too slow and not much real batting depth. Australia: Well, doubts about Clarke, and just look at the performance against India. South Africa: Missing the likes of Smith and Kallis and Now de Villiers has injury doubts also they have a tendency to choke. India: Can hardly be favored in English conditions, and top order looking weak. So if those four are "wobbling", it leaves the less favored teams, Pakistan, NZ, SL, and WI with a decent chance. Really, anyone could win, and it should be kind of exciting, though it won t prove much about which is really the "best" team at the moment to win this last ICC Champions Trophy.

This champion's trophy is very open and you can't tell who is favorite because it's the question of consistency and temperament. But being an Indian, I strongly would want India to win but still each team can be devastating on its day and each player has a match winner in their team who can take on anybody on their day. Also the pitch and atmosphere will play its part.

It is strange! Once the opposition says Governor s speech has no substance yet make useless noise; BJP says it is nothing but their own draft/text with some lines dropped and accuses the government/Ggovernor! blaming themselves? JDS sings the same tune as if they are one with BJP and discuss fruitless points. Shame and disgrace to the opposition. They must appreciate the steps taken on Gudka Ban,supporting the growers, rice- election Manifesto and such other steps taken by the Government which are wiser than the ordinary. Be creative and intelligently attack the Government and constructively. Please do not waste House s time and loose your credibility..

N.Srinivasan has not resigned. He stepped aside! But will continue to hold his position legally. This is worse than the spot fixing. The whole management has to wipe out to start clean, but who are we going to replace them with!! Where are the so called cricket legends? Why aren t they coming out and protest? Nobody is bigger than game. But what happened in the working-committee meeting of the BCCI is complete eyewash. One should stop watching cricket. Sponsors should withdraw themselves. Then only something will happen. Otherwise show will go on and on like this for decades. Feels shame on being an Indian cricket fan. Personally I am not too thrilled about Jagmohan Dalmiya being back in power position as he himself has a few dark spots during his time. But he may be one of the better options among all possible evils. Let’s hope he manages to clear some air for everyone and get things running again. A Champions trophy win surely will help!

The spate of resignations happening now need not hoodwink us into believing that good men are distancing themselves. They ought to have cleaned up the system from inside long ago as IPL and its weaknesses are not yesterday’s fresh arrivals. Acting when the things have come out in the open may be better than doing nothing even now but even those who are quitting now cannot be elevated to the status of quitting in protest. They have failed to arrest the slide in time.

Francis J. Saldanha, Moodubelle / Bahrain
02/06/2013 00:59:03

The string of resignations that are being given out by key members of BCCI and IPL, who are considered not corrupt and sincere to their duties, is hard to digest. This is simply running away from system instead of cleaning it and giving more space for the corrupt to control the system. Little too late Shuklaji…

A week ago, I met a Sanpada fruit wholesale dealer living in Nerul. Summery:
1. The main distributor charges Rs 22 per piece, allowing Rs 4 for local transporter and sub-distributors(tempo-owners)to split.
2. He is supplied by a main distributor based in Mysore, who charges Rs.16-17.
3. The Mysore distributor pays Re.1 as agent commissions, who collect the nut from farms to their katte, and pay the farmers RS 10, rate fixed by Coconut Development Board.
4. He also pays the main transporter in Mandya/Mysore, who contracts and delivers by truckloads over 800 kms to Navi Mumbai. The transport cost will be Rs. 2-3, allowing Mysore dealer with Rs 3 in profits.
The value chain for fruits, vegetables, mallige and areca-nut etc is similar. Everyone makes a living and wonders he gets least.
I think free market is a fair mechanism, where a competition keeps a balance and remedies a situation where someone is greedy.
The only parasites in the chain is the hafta collectors in Mumbai, who take advantage of self-employed small traders, who do not have the capacity to rent business outlets and are forced to hawk in public places and causing nuisance to pedestrians. They must be shot?

Philip Mudartha, Navi Mumbai

Yesterday, from dawn to dusk in a span of twelve hours, I quenched my thirst with tender coconut water three times. I traversed 200 square kilometers of Greater Mumbai and talked to three hawkers, all from Kerala. The summery:
1. The lorry supplies them at Rs.26 a piece.
2. They segregate the lot into very tender (no malai, all water, not so sweet), tender (malai forming, sweet water) and regular (malai formed, less water, very sweet). One needs skill to identify before selecting according to the customer demand.
3. They charge Rs. 30 and Rs. 35, according to category. Average sales price is Rs.32 a piece.
4. The street vendor makes Rs.6 per piece. if he is lucky to sell 200 each day, he makes Rs.1200.
5. all three declined to tell me the amount of hafta required to keep local hawaldar, goonda, and municipal clerk, and leader s chela satisfied enough to permit him run the street corner business. From my studies in this city, the expense is about 50% of daily picking, leaving the vendor with Rs. 3 per piece. That is 11.5% profit margin on gross sales. Surely, it does not fall in greed category.
4. The lorry picked them up from wholesale dealer based in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai. Contd

Just one question minister? Where do you propose to store the 2,000TMC water that drains into Arabian Sea? One needs land, either surface or sub-surface. In in fast draining river basins with heavy downpours in two months of the year, you do not not plan to submerge districts fully, do you? Harnessing storm and rainwater is a beautiful cliche, which calls for concrete action plans based on a regional (if not national) water management policy.

1. I thank Prof. Norbert Lobo for demographic inputs and my sources residing in this constituency.
2. I welcome the readers comments. I maintain that BJP scored a self-goal not only in this constituency but also in two coastal districts. They alarmed the moderate, apolitical and non-ideological 10% voter segment and disillusioned them. It is like a relationship that turned sour due to real and perceived wrongs, follies and double standards on corruption and morals. This middle is bipartisan and could vote against Congress in coming Lok Sabha elections. It depends how UPA performs in coming ten months at the center.
3. Narendra Modi is a strong and able CM in Gujarat. He has charisma that goes beyond his state. He is a crowd puller unlike anyone in Congress or BJP. He is a front-runner for PM candidacy within BJP. His detractors within his party wanted to show to him that he could not deliver in Karnataka.
4. Who attends rallies? The party cadre, ideologues and their friends. One does not need a Modi to convert the converted.
5. The middle 10% of course are likely to be driven away by his vitriol, which I suspect state BJP leaders (as Advani loyalists) wanted anyway.

Very good anaytical write up with photographs and statistics. But the point of Sonia Gandhi's visit and impact , Narednra Modi's visit after a challenge by B.Janardhana Poojary should have been covered to make the effects further impressive. What B.Janardhana Poojary had stated was proved true. There was no effect of MOdi's speech instead it was an advantage to Congress particularly to Mr Lobo and Mr Bava of Mangalore North.

Good analysis of Mangalore South Constituency. A wealth of information is shared here and Phillip had take quite efforts in bringing all facts and figures to compare with current situation. Yes , now all is well and time to work and re-iterate the final point or advise: "The Congress flag as well as that of nation is a judicious mix of saffron, white and green. It is a good practice to look at it each morning as our MLA and his euphoric supporters get down to work. thanks Phillip. well said and well written. Hats off to you. sorry for delayed response....

The Congress government should focus on critical infrastructure and public utilities issues instead of pandering to lobbies in the name of poor. Water, roads, waterways through inland rivers and sea lanes, quicker and one-window access to all essential and basic government services required by all sections of society and upgrading law and order machinery (police, courts, jails, and intelligence) must be priority.
Liquor, dance bars, lotteries, cheap tobacco, and many of excise earning sin businesses may be de-regulated and let the market determine how to deliver to the consumer, addicted or otherwise.
