Battery operated buggy transport system launched in Udupi

Udupi, 28 July 2010: Battery operated buggy transport system was launched in Car Street of Udupi on Tuesday to ease the pilgrimage of old and the disabled visiting Srikrishna Temple. Udupi district administration, with the sponsorship from Lanco Foundation, had provided a buggy for the benefit devotees visiting Srikrishna Temple, here. The new buggy is a three seater battery operated car with a luggage space at the back. Cost of this buggy is Rs 3.5 lakhs.
As the district administration has banned the entry of all vehicles in to Car Street, senior citizens and the disabled had to face hardship to walk from five entry points, till where the vehicles are allowed. Paryaya Shiroor Mutt pontiff Sri Laxmivara Theertha Swamiji inaugurated the new transport system by driving the buggy for three rounds in the Car Street, with MLA Raghupathi Bhat, CMC President Dinkar Shetty and Deputy Commissioner P Hemalatha on the backseat.
Hemalatha said that this battery operated car of Carrieall brand will be utilized to escort senior citizens and the disabled from five points to the temple. “If there is a demand for 2-3 more buggies we are committed to get them”, she said. Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat said that Srikrishna Mutt would manage the buggy transport system, with the co-operation from Udupi CMC.
“In future we can use more buggies for guided tours around Srikrishna Temple and Ashta Mutts. We can tie up with the tourism department for that”, Bhat added. CMC Vice President Indira Shekhar, Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, Diwan of Paryaya Shiroor Mutt Lathavya Acharya and others were present on the occasion.

Good initiative by the District administration. This will be a great help for the aged and sick devotees. This kind of provisions will make it convenient for the pilgrims who come to Udupi even from far away places. |
