Gandhi statue to be installed at Malpe beach on Independence Day

Udupi, 23 July 2010: A six feet height, eye-catching statue of father of the nation is likely to be installed at the tourist attraction Malpe beach on Aug 15th. Udupi based artists Purushothama Adwe, Harish Mallappanavar from Bangalore and Anil, a native of Davanagere have fiber casted the statue of Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi in sitting posture. 150 Kgs of fiber and some steel fabrication have been used inside the statue for support.

 

Prior to fiber casting a statue of Mahathma Gandhi they had made a clay sculpture, applied plaster of parris layers on it and then made a fiber casting. "In case anybody wants to make a metal (bronze) casting also it can be done on the fiber statue’’, Adwe said. Actually, the statue is two times of a life size. As it is in a sitting posture it comes only around six feet, he said.

 

 

"P Hemalatha, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi and the Head of the Malpe Development Committee has taken all precautions to get a splendid statue of the Gandhi. She has personally visited the sculpting and fiber casting site at every stage’’, Adwe appreciates the commitment of the DC.

 

"Rs 5 lakhs will be utilised for the sculpting of the statue and constructing a base for installing the statue at the premises of the beach. We are planning to install the Gandhi statue on Aug 15th’’, DC said.
