Udupi: Youth swarm Udupi job fair

Udupi, 30 November 2010: There was enthusiasm, anticipation and some anxiety among the youth who had turned up at the two-day Job Fair, which began at the Ammanni Ramanna Shetty Hall here on Friday. The fair was organised by the Skill Commission, the Department of Employment and Training, and the Karnataka Vocational Training and Skill Development Corporation.

 

Vinay N., a resident of Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district, who had passed SSLC and had six months experience in marketing, said: “I am ready for any job be it in private sector or government sector. I came to know about this Job Fair through newspaper advertisements.”

 

Shailesh Shetty from Mangalore, who passed B.E. in Computer Science at Srinivas Institute of Technology this year, said: “I want a job in either software development or software training field. The organisers have made good arrangements here.”

 

Divya R.P., an MBA with three years of experience, said she wanted a job in or around Udupi. “I worked as a Product Officer in a pharma company for a year in Mumbai. I want to be near my family, which stays at Kodavoor here (in Udupi),” she said.

 

 

Shilpa Shetty, who hailed from Mudrangady village in Udupi district and who had a Diploma in Electronics and Communications from NRAM Polytechnic in Nitte, besides six months of experience in a firm in Mangalore, said: “I am looking for a job in either private or government sector.”

 

Pradeep Poojary, a resident of Huchikere village in Kundapur taluk, who was studying in an ITI in Ampar, said he was prepared for any job which suited his qualification.

 

Only candidates who were PUC pass or fail or who had done any of SSLC, ITI, diploma, B.E., and had attended the assessment process conducted by the Department of Employment and Training in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur districts on November 9 and 10, could participate in the Fair.

 

Assistant Employment Officer R.M. Nayak said 2,173 candidates had cleared the assessment process. Companies from information technology, business process outsourcing, manufacturing, retail, hospitality and health care sectors were participating in the fair, he said.

 

Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha inaugurated the fair. She said people in the coastal districts preferred white-collared jobs. While 75 per cent of those attending the fair were likely to get jobs, the rest would come to know what they were lacking in and come prepared next time, she said.
