Rare delicacies mark ‘Aatidonji Dina’ in Udupi

Udupi, 25 Jul 2012: The women organisations in Udupi came together to replicate the traditional culture of Tulunadu by celebrating “Aatidonji Dina, Ponjove Kuta,” here on Tuesday.
The traditional ceremony was indeed a nostalgia of memories down the lane with women dressed in traditional Tulunadu attires welcoming the spectators with due respect to the customs practiced in the soil of the region since ages. Nowadays these customs and rituals are observed only in some remote villages of Tulunadu. Otherwise, it is slowly becoming extinct in the surge of modernisation.
The mouth watery dishes displayed on the occasion were truly awesome fiesta to the eyes and nevertheless to the taste buds. The menu listed out from ancient Tulunadu cuisines included “Menthe Ganji,” “Timare Chutney,” “Pathrode,” “Tujanka Vade,” “Halasina Gatti,” “Manjolertha Gatti,” “Gunda,” “Chilmi Adde,” “Balekayee Podi,” “Mambla” and “Gendada Adde” among others. The “Kashaya” that was served to the guests at the end of the celebration was not less to any allopathic antibiotic medicine.
The celebrations introduced one to the old legacy of Tulunadu culture and also helped to experience the pinch of the customs that was practiced during agricultural activities in the midst of heavy monsoon.
The inauguration of the ceremony was done in a unique way by playing “Chenne Mane” and the music that was played in the background was “Siri Paddana” turning the whole atmosphere absolutely into pastoral civilisation.
Speaking on the occasion, Zilla Panchayat President Katpadi Shankar Poojary said changes are inevitable, however the responsibilities lie on the people to preserve the culture and tradition.
People should try to carry forward the ancient customs simultaneously accepting the transformations in the society, he added.
Udupi Taluk Women Organisation President Sheela Shetty said these days children prefer eating fast food and they are strangers to the traditional delicacies.
Pizza and burgers dominate the children’s choices. It is necessary to make children to know about the ancient customs and rituals by organising these sorts of programmes, she opined.
