‘Around 6000 persons are the victims of AIDS in the Udupi District’-SA Prabhakar Sharma

Udupi, 07 Sept 2011: Since last 20 years due to the relentless efforts of the media and publicity in the task of the eradication of HIV-AIDS, there has been considerable control over this dreaded disease. Otherwise, there would have serious adverse effects on the society, said S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, the Executive Officer of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat while addressing the press on behalf of various associations spreading awareness about the disease on Tuesday, September 7, 2011.
Speaking further, Prabhakar Sharma said that due to HIV-AIDS many people are losing jobs and their claim on the ancestral property about which there have been many complaints. He said that the Zilla Panchayat administration will undertake appropriate steps to safeguard the rights of the victims of the disease and the victims should not give up their rights and they should be mentally strong.
Speaking at this occasion, Dr. H. Ashok, District officer in charge of the AIDS prevention cell, who presided over the programme said that there are around 6000 persons in the Udupi District who have fallen victims of AIDS. Out of these around 60 percent are below the age of 40. This statistics is of serious nature, he said.
Dr. P.V. Bhandary, eminent psychiatrist, Pramod Madhwaraj, Industrialist and District Information ofiicer-M. Junjanna were present as guests.
