Mangalore: 84 Konkani Children get taste of ancestral living in Rural Village

Mangalore, Dec 5, 2013 : The city unit of Daiji Dubai organized a study tour for 84 chosen Konkani children from Mangalore and Kinnigoli deanery, to know the traditional life of their ancestors in rural villages on Sunday December 1. These children have gotten an opportunity to experience rural living, see the cow-shed, wonder in woods and plantations, explore streams and mother nature, see how the cow-dung is used for organic farming in paddy fields.
Kinnigoli parish priest Fr Alfred Pinto offered motion for the workshop on exploring the ancestral living by pouring rice into mura at the household of Gerald Rodrigues in Moorukaveri, near Kinnigoli, here on Sunday morning. Stella teacher, youth leader Charlotte Pinto and Carmine Rodrigues also joined Fr Pinto in offering motion.
The children were segregated in groups and dispersed in different directions to explore the rural living on their own. The resource person introduced the rural family and their neighbourhood.
The quiz was held on the aspects that the children have explored till Sunday afternoon. Rocky Pinto, Nelson Sequeira, Winifred, Manu Bahrain, Jossy Pinto, Prakash, Richard, Rafael, ICYM members led by Lloyd assisted in this regard.
The concluding ceremony was held on Sunday evening. The traditional ‘Gumat’ drummers group of the late Bonaventure, Pedmale, Bantwal taluk presented melodious music to begin the ceremony.
Vishwa Konkani Kendra founder president Basti Vaman Shenoy, educationist J B Sequeira, Konkani leader Richard Moras were present at the dais.
The children representatives Aishwarya Naik and Maclean Rodrigues shared their rural experiences on the occasion.
Kinnigoli’s veteran Konkani writer Avelyn Dantis was felicitated.
Melvyn Rodrigues delivered the introductory address. Hemacharya welcomed the gathering. C J S proposed vote of thanks. Vitori Karkal compered the morning session, while Walter Dantis compered the evening programme.
Ancy Paladka, Vincy Angelore, Annie Mascarenhas assisted in the programme.
