Mangalore: Funeral of Shimoga Priest Fr John Jossy Sequeira

Mangalore, 22 Oct 2013: Young and energetic priest  Fr John Jossy Sequeira of the Diocese of Shimoga died of road accident on October 21st morning on a national highway 48 which connects Mangalore and Bangalore in  Kalladka 33 KMs away from Mangalore. The santro car which he was driving collided with a Karnataka state government bus.

 


The body of the diseased priest is placed in the mortuary of a private hospital in Mangalore after the legal proceedings. On Tuesday morning the 22nd  of October 2013, the body will be taken to St Joseph’s Church, Sagar in Shimoga Diocese where he was the assistant parish priest. At 3.30 p.m. a Mass will be celebrated in Sagar Church for the repose of the soul of the priest. 
After the Mass in Sagar the body will be brought to his native parish of Uppinangady and the Funeral Mass and funeral would be held at Our Lady Virgin of the Poor Church, Uppinangady at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday 23rd October.


Both the Masses in Sagar as well as Uppinangady will be presided over by Most Rev. Dr Henry D’Souza, the Apostolic Administrator of Shimoga and Bishop of Bellary.


The diseased priest’s cousin’s daughter who died in the said accident is Loveleena Vinitha D’Souza (21 years), daughter of Vincent D’Souza and Lucy Fernandes from Kakkepadavu belonging to Madanthyar parish.  She was the final year engineering student of Vivekananda Engineering College, Puttur. Her funeral mass  would be held on Tuesday the 22nd  of October 2013 at 3.30 p.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Madanthyar.

Shimoga Priest died of road accident

 

Bantwal, 21 Oct, 2013 : Young and energetic priest  Fr John Jossy Sequeira of the Diocese of Shimoga died of road accident on October 21st morning on a national highway 48 which connects Mangalore and Bangalore in  Kalladka 33 KMs away from Mangalore. The santro car which he was driving collided with a Karnataka state government bus.

 


He was ordained on the 4th of April 2010 for the Diocese of Shimoga. After being secretary to the Bishop of Shimoga for two years he was appointed to the parish ministry. He was the Assistant priest at St Joseph’s Church, Sagar in Shimoga Diocese. He was born on January 23, 1981 in Uppinangady parish of Mangalore Diocese which is 54 KMs away from Mangalore.

 

He was on his way to attend the nuptial mass of Roshan Fernandes in a nearby parish. Roshan Fernandes is the driver of Shimoga Bishop’s House and his bride is from Sagar.  It was a double marriage of Roshan and his brother Ronald whose bride is from Shimoga.

 

‘He was a young and energetic priest of Shimoga.  The incident is very tragic and  sad.  We have lost a very good priest.  He was much loved by his people in the parish where he was serving’ said Bishop Henry D’Souza, the Administrator of Shimoga and Bishop of Bellary.

 

According to Fr Duming Dias of Diocese of Shimoga ‘Fr John Jossy was a good and effective preacher; was a good resource person to train students.’

 

Brother of Fr John Jossy Sequeira is Fr Vincent Sequeira who is a priest of the diocese of Mangalore and is the professor of scripture at St Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary Mangalore.  The professors of the seminary and priests from Shimoga have reached the hospital to assist in any way possible.

 

The diseased priest’s cousin’s daughter  who is an engineering student too died in the accident as she too was travelling in the car to attend the nuptials. The bodies are in the government hospital of Bantwal near Kalladka. Funeral details are awaited after the legal processes are held.
