Udupi, 30 Sep 2013: Rotary Club International (RCI) – Shirva organized a live programme on rain water harvesting and profitable farming in the farmland of progressive farmer Ramakrishna Sharma Bantakal, here on Sunday September 29.
Ramakrishna Sharma offered information on how he has grown palm, pepper, plantain, papaya, jasmine, cashew and other commercial crops in his seven acre farmland. He has demonstrated the simple method of rain water harvesting.
Speaking on the gathering, Ramakrishna said that the shortage of farmhands, poor prices of farm produce in the market has been driving the farmers to abandon farming. Its significant that despite the losses the paddy has been grown since the past 30 years. The support price offered by the state authorities is not enough and the irony is that youth are not keen to pursue farming, said Ramakrishna to explore the future of farming.
RCI former assistant governor K R Patkar, Dr Gururaj, Dr Arun Hegde, Herald Coutinho, Lucas D’Souza, Lucas D’Souza, advocate Melvyn D’Souza, Paul Aranha, Suraj Sharma, Shubhada Sharma were also present on the occasion.
RCI – Shirva president Leo Noronha welcomed the gathering. The secretary Raghupati Aithal proposed the vote of thanks.
