The incident occurred at the city bus stand here on Wednesday at about 2.00 pm, when lawyer Shantiprasad Hegde, who was with his daughter was turning his Innova car.
The car hit a student standing nearby. Angered by this, the student, identified as Tanseer Ahmed, studying in a Mangalore-based college, allegedly assaulted the lawyer.
Soon the other lawyers and locals joined in the fight and advocate Hegde fired 2 rounds with his pistol in self defence. Luckily, both times the bullets missed and no injury was reported. Tanseer, however, claimed that Hegde, having missed the aim, hit his head with the revolver and inflicted injuries.
Fearing for his life, Tanseer ran and hid inside the nearby Juma Masjid. A group tried to create trouble in front of the mosque but the community brethrens there intervened and calmed down the situation.
The police who arrived at the spot took the student in their custody and shifted him to Wenlock hospital in Mangalore.
Meanwhile, advocate Hegde lodged a complaint against Tanseer alleging that he tried to strangle him and even snatched away his revolver and fired at him. Hegde too has been admitted to hospital.
Moodbidri town police have registered a case in this regard. Tight security was deployed at the spot following the incident.
