Allahabad, 5 Aug 2013: Flood relief work was undertaken by Allahabad Diocesan Development and Welfare Society (DDWS), the students of St Mary’s Teachers Training Institute and Roman Catholic Church.
DDWS director Fr Deepak said, ‘It was a challenge to travel through the flooded-roads by boat and reaching out to people trapped in the houses. Some were dropping the ropes, some by lowering the buckets to pick up food packets and water. Most needed water to survive, candles and match- boxes. People were without food, water and electricity safeguarding their belongings trapped in the houses was a big challenge. Some of them don’t want the leave the houses just because their belongings and vehicles trapped inside the houses. Many were waiting for help and the help came by boating through the streets. Sadakoan par naave chal rahi hey. Some have lost all hope crying for help and wanted to come out from those trapped houses having no water, light, no charge in mobile unable to contact their near and dear ones.
Fr Deepak, Fr Archie, students of St Mary’s Teachers Training College, Rini, Dukhan, local MPs and employees of local administrations took a bold step in going through the flooded waters morning till evening boating through the streets house-to-house distributing food and water.
