Speaking on the occasion, the minister Ramanath Rai said, ‘According to the manifesto, we have inaugurated the distribution of rice at the rate of Re 1 and every BPL card holder will get 30 kilograms of rice every month. Congress party has brought many programmes which benefit the poor. Right to Education (RTE), Food Security Bill, widow pension and many other projects have been implemented by the Congress government. I urge the public to join hands in supporting the government in this good cause.’

Mangalore north MLA Moideen Bava said that more than 1,80,000 BPL card holders will be benefited from this scheme. Now the process is on to find out the BPL and APL card holders. Providing rice for Rs 1 to the BPL families is the first of its kind in the country. He congratulated CM Siddaramaiah on behalf of entire district.

Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo, in his presidential address said, ‘Before the elections Congress had released a manifesto in which providing 30 kgs rice at the cost of Rs 1 per kg to the BPL families was announced, this has been implemented today. Whatever Congress had promised, the same has been implemented by the Chief Minister. Many people did not take this programme seriously, because there was fear and doubt in peoples mind whether the government could provide the huge quantity of rice to the masses at such cheap price or not. But the Congress government proved it by launching the scheme today.’

The state government has a deficit of Rs 4,000 crore. More than 6 to 7 thousand tonnes of rice is needed to distribute rice among 1,80,000 families. The government has shown its concern for the poor families and launched the distribution of rice within a short period. He further said, ‘We need to wipe out the tears of the poor. There is no politics in the distribution of rice. If there will be any problems in the distribution, the poor families will suffer. This is our responsibility to see that such programmes are successful,’ said MLA Lobo.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) N Prakash and zilla panchayat CEO Dr Vijayaprakash was present at the dais.

Sharana Basappa, deputy director of food and civil supplies welcomed the gathering.  Y V Rajan proposed the vote of thanks.

I heartily welcome the ANNA BHAGYA Yojan for the poor. It is to be exeuted sinceely and with good quality rice and for students good quality milk. There are chances of miscreants playing foul and spoil the name of the scheme and programme as finding stones in rice or worms/cretures in milk etc. The enemies are waiting for a chance to such things to happen. There fore there must be a sincere team to supervise and provide good support service. It is then certaily going to be popular and useful. I do not agree that giving of rice Re. a kilo, will make the people idle. They will save their daily earnings and gradually there can be prices down and the economy to revive to the advantage of all. It is worthwhile to consider labour wages paying by grains instead of cash, which would be moore helpful for agriculturists to cultivate pady fields in coastal area and give a face lift to agriculture. There are hundred ways to rejuvinate the economy if the leaders play fair and honest. Let the political leaders work in this direction. To begin with to make the ANNA BHAGYA a success. The Budget of CM may be of great aid and assistance for all his novel ideas. Let us wish them well.
