Udupi: Kaup to be Upgraded as Town Panchayat: Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake

Udupi, 26 May 2013: The urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake announced the proposal to upgrade Kaup as town panchayat.
Addressing the media persons after visiting different worship centers across Kaup legislative assembly constituency here on Saturday May 25, the minister Sorake said that Kaup legislative constituency is so vast that it needs special emphasis on infrastructural development. The proposal is under way to upgrade Kaup as town panchayat and an amount of Rs 5 lac was approved when he was MP, said minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.
The minister Sorake offered assurance of his serious efforts in introducing Bahugrama Project to ease the water crisis across the district. Under the project, every household family in each village will be provided with drinking water, said minister Sorake.
‘I am aware of environmental destruction caused by heavy industries in Udupi district. Nothing can be done on those mega industries that are already established. Meanwhile, in the future the locals’ interest will be taken care while establishing industries,’ said minister Sorake.
When the media persons queried the minister Sorake about turning Netravati River, he said that if 2,000 TMC quantum of water from the rivers of undivided Dakshina Kannada which drains into Arabian Sea is harnessed; there will not be any need for such a mega project. The focus is on harnessing the water that drains the sea, stressed minister Sorake.

| Just one question minister? Where do you propose to store the 2,000TMC water that drains into Arabian Sea? One needs land, either surface or sub-surface. In in fast draining river basins with heavy downpours in two months of the year, you do not not plan to submerge districts fully, do you? Harnessing storm and rainwater is a beautiful cliche, which calls for concrete action plans based on a regional (if not national) water management policy. | |

| I am pleased that Sorake is a lot interested in harnessing rain water. If 10% rain water is conserved...it will be an ultimate achievement. We need proven modern and scientific methods of water conservation...user friendly and cost effective projects! Can we get details suitable and compatible to DK region? I am already practicing simple method of big pond (madaga?). Over the period of nearly 10 years we can see substantial improvement in water table. Not too happy about 0.1% conservation! Looking for more and better!! | |
