Moodubelle, 31 December 2012:  Youngsters Pamboor and Shirva Parish Cricket teams emerged as champions in the category of inter-village and inter-parish  Mercy Cricket Trophy Tournament  2012-13. The two days tournament was organized at St. Lawrence PU College ground on December 29 and 30, 2012. The surplus amount that was generated through sponsorship and donations were used for charitable purpose.

 

The much awaited tournament was inaugurated on December 29, 2012 at 8 am. Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, parish priest of Moodubelle, Rajendra Shetty, present President of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Commodore Jerome Castelino, Dean of St. Lawrence College, Gerald Fernandes, former President of Udupi Zilla Panchayat Captains of Moodubelle Junior Cricketers (MJC) Herman Castelino and Dunhill Cricketers, Joel Mathias were present for the inaugural function.

 

Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes along with the dignitaries inaugurated the tournament by lighting the lamp. The tournament was official opened by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes bating few balls bowled by Rajendra Shetty with Gerald Fernandes as the umpire. The inaugural function was conducted by Ivan Menezes.

 

 

 

Soon after  the inaugural function, 14 teams for Moodueblle, Kattingeri, Pamboor, Padubelle and Kuntalnagar vied with each other for the final berth in the inter-village tournament. Each match was confined to four over limit. At the end of the first day, two teams-Youngsters Pamboor and Geleyara Balaga from Padubelle emerged as the finalists.

 

On Sunday,  December 30, 2012, tournament commenced with 14 teams from 13 parishes vying with each other for the coveted trophy and cash prize. The 13 parishes included: Sasthan, Balkunje, Kateel, Pakshikere, Shirva, Shankerpura (Pangla), Udupi, Kuntalnagar, Katapadi, Kolalgiri, Udyavara, Thottam and Moodubelle (Two teams).

 

Following the knock-out matches between the teams divided into two groups A and B, team from Shirva and MJC from Moodubelle emerged as finalists. 

 

Two final matches, one between Youngsters Pamboor and Geleyara Balaga and Shirva and MJC Moodubelle were played  as the last matches of the Mercy Cricket Trophy Tournament 2012-13. The final matches were restricted to three over for each side.

 

In the match played between Youngsters Pamboor and Geleyara Balaga Padubelle, Youngsters Pamboor emerged as Champions and Geleyara Balaga as Runners Up. 

 

In the inter-parish final match between Shirva and MJC Moodubelle, team from Shirva emerged as champions defeating MJC Moodubelle by three wickets.

 

 

 

 

 

The valedictory and prize distribution function was held on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at 4.30 pm. Ivan D’Souza, Secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee(KPCC) was the chief guest. The guests of honour included Rajendra Shetty, President of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Devdas Hebbar, Commodore Jerome Castelino, John Menezes, former principal of St. Lawrence PU College, Sadananda Rao and William D’Sa, former Senior Teachers from the Church Aided Higher Primary School.

 

First of all, the three senior teachers-John Menezes, Sadananda Rao and William D’Sa were honoured by Ivan D’Souza. Prior to their honour, Devdas Hebbar introduced these three teacerhs to the assembled audience.

 

Next, financial assistance was handed over to 16 needy families including those who have been mentally and physically challenged, suffering from cancer and extreme poverty. The organizers of the tournament made a provision to the Sundara Koraga’s family to provide 1000/- rupees each for 15 months. Financial assistance was also given to Manasa Pamboor and to 8 students of  St. Lawrence Degree College.

 

The penultimate programme of the valedictory function was the prize distribution ceremony. Winners of both the tournaments-Youngsters Pamboor and Shirva received cash prize of Rs. 4567/- each and trophies and certificates. The Runners Up-Geleyara Balaga, Padubelle and MJC Moodubelle received the cash prize of Rs. 3456/- each and trophies and certificates. 

 

Prizes were also given away to individual best performers such as best batsman, best bowler, man of the series and best entertainer. There were also many surprise spot prizes.

 

The valedictory function was compeered by  Manoj D’Souza. He also welcomed the guests. Vote of thanks was proposed by Ivan Menezes.

 

During the two days tournament running commentary was provided by Prasanna Kumar in English, John Mathias in Hindi and Roopesh and Hanif in Kannada. John Mathias was adjudged as the best entertainer. 

 

A number of persons served as match referees. These included Roshan D’Souza, Jeetesh Aranha, Kevin Mendonca, Vincent Fernandes, Valerian Fernandes, Gilbert Sequeira and others. Prashant, Rashela and Vibrolt recorded scores.  The ground and pitch were prepared under the leadership of Raghu Poidapadi and Sundara Guddabettu.

 

Last year at the end of December 2011, the organizers had started the Cricket Tournament under the title of Dunhill MJC Trophy and out of the proceeds they had provided financial assistance to four  economically disadvantaged families. This year the organizers had renamed the trophy as ‘Mercy Cricket Trophy 2012-13’. 

 

According to Ivan Menezes and Herman Castelino, still there are requests for financial assistance which they are considering. In future too they are planning to organize such tournaments involving other games such as Volleyball and Throw ball along with cricket.

 

The organizers of the Mercy Cricket Trophy are quite please about the overwhelming response that they received from different cricket teams from different villages and parishes as well as positive response from all the sponsors and donors due to whose efforts they could provided financial assistance to a number of families.

Excellent coverage and hats off to Ivan , Heman thier entire team for organizing such an event. There is no doubt today s youngsters are capable of exhibiting exemplary leadership and organizational skills. Helping the less privileged of the society is the best way to contributing to the improvement and development of our great nation. keep it up boys we all are with you. Very happy to be a part of this event and upcoming too.
