Manipal, 30 December 2012: Runners-up last year, Madras University turned the tables on defending champions Jain University Bangalore in the final of the South Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament at the Manipal University ground here on Sunday, emerging champions with a 66-run win. Both teams qualify for the Inter-Zone Cricket for the Rohinton Baria, also being hosted by Manipal University at these same grounds after a day’ s break tomorrow.

Jain University have lost the final but will definitely be happy being runners up for they are in the weaker of the two groups for the Inter-Zone. They take on Aligarh Muslim University, North zone winners, in the quarter-final match match and Madras University play Jamia Millia Islamia the North Zone Runners.

Madras University won the toss and batted first. They made 218 for seven in the 50 overs. That was good enough total on this big ground where chasing a target is generally difficulty. The Madras University batsmen could hit only 13 boundaries in their total. Which meant the singles and braces were important to build comfortable total.

Madras University having played two of their matches on this wicket were aware of that and when they chose to bat first it was no surprise. They lost two wickets quite early, for 38, but then got down to putting up a decent score. That was mainly due to the effort of captain S Avaikkarasan, who was declared “Man of the Match” for his 66. He was the last man out in the 49th over. He got those runs with four boundaries and from 81 deliveries.

Good contributions came from R Rohith 38, Ganga Shridhar 32 and Govind Raj 24. Shashindra who was the “Man of The Series” chipped in with two wickets and so did off spinner Abdul Mazeed. The rest of the Jain bowlers were expensive.

For Jain University, today’s match was their first on the wicket, and their batsmen looked for boundaries which were hard to come by. They did not get the singles and twos for a good part of their innings and slowly found the match slipping out of their grasp.  It was only when ten overs were left, they thought of getting quick runs. But it was too late by then.

In their total of 184 there were only seven boundaries. The fourth wicket fell at 116 in the 31st over and that was when they tried to go for the singles and twos. With the field well spread out, they had no choice at that stage. The fifth wicket fell at 159 in the 43rd over and they were all out for 184 in the 49th over. Shashindra  top scored with 64, he had three fours.
In the match for the third place, JNTU Hyderabad beat Andhra University, Vishakapatnam by 10 wickets at the MIT ground.
