Udupi: ‘Reservation to Koraga Community is not charity by the Government’-Mavalli Shankar

Udupi, 29 Oct 2012:“The reservations given to the Koraga Community is not a charity by the government but the achievement of many years of struggle. Hence, the members of the Koraga  community  should not lokk themselves down and the progress of the Koraga community should come from the community itself”, said Mavalli Shankar, the chief convener of the ‘Dasamsa’. He was speaking at a function organized to felicitate the meritorious students of the Koraga Community organized by  Udupi Zilla Koraga Sevabhivruddhi Sangha on Sunday, October 28, 2012.

 

Mavalli Shankar further said that society has been making progress in all direction, however, the Koraga community is still in the dark. Being the original inhabitants of the region, the members of the Koraga community still forced to carry on menial work. Today, the governments honours persons who excel in Bharatanatyam and music, but those people who use leather instruments of music such as drums are made to beg and live on charity.

 

 

While expressing his desire that Koraga community should worship Babasaheb Ambedkar who has given respect to the dalit community and has enabled the community to progress in different fileds, he also said that attempt should be made to make the students aware of the achievements and work of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

 

MLA of Udupi , Raghupati Bhat who inaugurated the function said that government is doing everything possible for the betterment of the Koraga community. Meanwhile, an appeal  for additional reservation for the Koraga community was submitted to the MLA.

 

Chief Guest industrialist  Pramod Madhwaraj and Ravi Alevooru, president of the Udupi District Koraga Abhivruddhi Sangha were on the dais.On this occasion, achievers such as Dr. Babu, lecturer in MGM College, Udupi, Dinesh Kenjoor and Sabitha were honoured. Similarly, those students from the Koraga community who had scored highest marks in the SSLC examination for the year 2011-12 were felicitated.
