Udupi, 07 Jun 2012: Monsoons may have brought good tidings for farmers and relief for people from the searing heat, for but for motorists it has been a nightmarish drive.
On Thursday, one person was killed and another injured in a rather bizarre accident at Kaup when the load of iron pipes intruded into the long chassis truck cabin when the driver applied brakes all of a sudden to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of him at Halemariyamma temple, Kaup on NH 66.
The deceased was truck cleaner Rahul from Maharashtra, who was seriously injured and later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The truck was on its way from Pune to ONGC-MRPL construction site at Kuttettur. The driver Santosh had a close shave with death with the pipes extending about 20 ft in front of the cabin, just missing his head. He was later extricated from the seat by the police. The accident caused a traffic pile up for two hours.
In another accident at Kottara Chowki in Mangalore, an Omni van driver suffered injuries when a speeding private bus rammed into the vehicle from the rear resulting in the Omni jumping the road divider and hitting another two vehicles.
The driver Udaya Shetty, who suffered injuries, was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. Traffic was blocked for 30 minutes due to the incident.
