Udupi, 01 February 2012: It is being proved at the Yakshagana Kalakendra that the art has no boundaries. 20 young artists from the far away state Sikkim have come here and are learning the art which they never seen or heard before, they are getting ready to introduce this art in their areas and they are anxious to search the possibilities of blending this with the art culture available in their place.
Delhi’s National School of Drama (N.S.D.) has started a branch in Sikkim a year ago, where the 20 students are studying stage acting. The Institution has sent these students to Karnataka, that too to learn Yakshagana the amazing art of the coast. The Teacher of the Kalakendra Sanjeeva Suvarna has the responsibility to introduce Yakshagana to 10 students so that they can play one scene.
Bust since there is shortage of time, Suvarna and his team are working with the students for 12 hours a day. The students do not know the local language and the Teacher cannot teach them in their language either. So the silent Jatyu Moksha Yakshagana scene is being taught to these students.
The coordinator of this team Rohini says that the dance, stepping and body language and face movement which cannot be taught by any Institution, but is taught in Yakshagana, so that is why we have come here to study this. One of the student Roopa Sharma is thrilled with the learning this art and the specialty is that she is an expert in the traditional “Marooni” dance of Sikkim.
