Moodubelle: Leadership Training Camp of Scouts and Guides held in St. Lawrence PU College

Moodubelle, 03 September 2011: Two days Leadership Training Camp was held at St. Lawrence Composite PU College on Friday and Saturday, September 2-3, 2011. Around 200 Scouts and Guides as well as Cubs and Bulbuls from 15 schools covering the Kaup Local Association participated in this significant camp.

 

The camp routine began at 4 pm on Friday, September 2, 2011 with the hoisting of the Scouts and Guides flag in front of the College office. The inaugural function  was held in the College hall at 4.30 pm. The Correspondent of the Parish educational institutions, Fr. Joswey Fernandes presided over the function. The other dignitaries on the dais included: Mrs. Blossom D’Souza, Manager of Syndicate Bank, Moodubelle, Fr. Paul Sequeira-Principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College, Mrs. Jacinta Aranha-President of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza-member of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, A.K. Alva-Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Fr. Lancy Saldanha-Principal of St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Ronald Saby D’Souza-Former President of Bellevision (Dubai), Mrs. Shilpa Nayak-President of the Parents-Teachers Association, Edwin Alva-District Scouts Commissioner, Mrs. Rajalakshmi D. Shetty-District Guides Commissioner, Prabhakar Bhat-State Deputy Commissioner of the Association, Shivanna Bayar-Local Association Secretary, Alban Rodrigues-Local Association Executive President and Harold D’Souza-Camp Director. Besides, Commodore Jerome Castelino and Devdas Hebbar-President of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat attended the function.

 

 

Following the prayer sung by a group of Scouts and Guides, Fr. Paul Sequeira welcomed the dignitaries and all the Scouts and Guides participants of the training camp.  Harold D’Souza, the Director of the training camp read out the entire programme for the two days.

 

The two days training camp was formally inaugurated by Mrs. Blossom D’Souza. In her message to the campers, Mrs. Blossom D’Souza said that ‘Leaders are not born, but are made’, and emphasized on the importance of such camps in shaping the future leaders of the society and nation. She also said that student organizations such as NCC, NSS and sports are important means in developing leadership qualities among the students. She spoke about the qualities of positive leadership.

 

Mrs. Jacinta Aranha and Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza in their speeches wished the two days leadership training camp of the Scouts and Guides success.

 

Fr. Joswey Fernandes felicitated the sponsors of the camp-Syndicate Bank, Moodubelle Branch, Bellevision (Dubai) and Mr. Bernard  and Mrs. Regina D’Souza. Mr. Ronald Saby D’Souza accepted the honour on behalf of Bellevision (Dubai) and his parents.

 

In his presidential address, Fr. Joswey Fernandes traced the origin and growth of the Scouts and Guides movement during the Second World War in Europe and highlighted the importance of this organization in countries like India. He also hoped that such leadership developing camps would go a long way in instilling leadership qualities among the young students.

 

The programme was compeered by Mrs. Hilda Aranha and the vote of thanks was given by Srinivas Ballal.

 

Following the end of the function, the Scouts and Guides as well as the Cubs and Bulbuls took out a procession through the main road, entering the church compound and back to the college ground.

 

There were various programmes for the Scouts and Guides as well as Cubs and Bulbuls to cultivate their leadership qualities.

 

In the night at 8.30 camp fire was organized following which the Scouts and Guides presented school-wise variety entertainment programmes including singing, dance, skits, etc. The camp fire programme was presided over by Fr. Paul Sequeira. Devdas Hebbar was the chief guest and the guests of honour included: Alban Rodrigues and Prabhakar Bhat.

 

 

Following the successful end of the leadership training camp, the valedictory function was held on Saturday, September 3, 2011. The function was presided over by Fr. Paul Sequeira. Commodore Jerome Castelino (VSM) and Mrs. Ravikala-Block resource Person(BRP) were the chief guests.

 

Following the prayer, Shivanna Bayer-Secretary of the Local Association welcomed the guests. Harold D’Souza-Camp Director gave a brief report of the achievements of the camp. One Scout, one Guide and one Scout Teacher-Hitesh Bhandary of Government PU College, Polipu, Kaup narrated their experience of the camp.

 

Speaking at the Valedictory function, the chief guest, Commodore  Jerome Castelino traced the background of the establishment of the Scouts and Guides in India and pointed out that it was the retired Army Officers who initiated the Scouts and Guides Movement in India. He expressed hope that the two days camp helped the Scouts and Guides to develop their leadership qualities and emphasized the need to develop not only leadership qualities but also to imbibe good virtues in order to become the responsible and patriotic citizens of India.

 

 

Certificates of the successful completion of the Leadership Training Camp were distributed to the various schools  by the dignitaries on the dais.

 

In his presidential message, Fr. Paul Sequeira expressed happiness at the successful completion of the camp and said that St. Lawrence PU College was quite pleased to have Scouts and Guides as well as Cubs and Bulbuls from different schools in the Kaup zone. He asked the students to carry good memories and qualities of the camp with them to their homes and schools.

 

Scout Teacher-Ganga Naik compeered the programme. Harold D’Souza-Director of the Camp proposed the vote of thanks.

 

After lowering of the Scouts and Guides flag which was hoisted yesterday, students went back to their respective homes after successfully completing two days long Leadership Training Camp.
