Udupi, 01 July 2011: Udupi City Municipality has received national level Green Leaf award for waste management, but unable to find a solution for the waste disposal in Udupi city! Though this issue has been discussed a lot on Thursday in the City Municipality meeting, a solution could not be found!

In Adi Udupi, outside the APMC yard on the roadside the wastage gets dumped from the market, hotels and the shops. City Corporation member Naveen Chandra drew attention in the meeting on this issue asking City Municipality to take action. President Kiran Kumar gave instructions to the officers to issue notice to APMC on this matter.

The roadside wastage of Adi Udupi then became the subject for the serious discussion. Ruling party member Mohan Upadya revealed that for the wastage collection Rs. 30 is being collected from every house, but the waste is not collected every day, so having no option people throw the waste on the road, he said.

Opposition party member Jayananda said that only 50% of the people pay Rs. 30 per month. Municipality is not collecting the waste from those who are not paying money, earlier there were waste bins here and there, which are not there now, so those who are not paying are throwing on the road, he said.

Former President Dinakara Shetty suggested that, there is no need for collection of Rs. 30, if the waste is collected free of charge from all the houses then the problem will be solved, he said. But this suggestion is rejected because of the expenses in collecting waste, employees salary etc.

Sthayee Samithi President Naveen Bhandary suggested that now no need to collect the money, at the end of the year at Rs. 30 per month total Rs. 360 per year can be collected as tax, he said. But this suggestion was also got rejected due to technical reasons.

President Kiran Kumar spoke and said that in City Municipality there is shortage of about 221 workers. Waste collection has been given to Self Help Sangha, but they too have shortage of workers. That is the reason the waste collection could not be done properly in all the wards, he expressed helplessness.

At last the Commissioner divided City Municipality’s every 3 wards as one zone and made total 10 zones and made a proposal to give contract of each zone to private contractors for the waste collection. The gathering agreed to finalize this issue in a special meeting.

In rest of the City Municipality meeting other issues were discussed such as; compensation to house repairs, road – drainage issues, inner drainage, distribution of sports uniforms to government employees, Vajapayee Nagara residency project, Malpe crematory and other issues.

Waste collection and disposal is everybody s responsibility.Other than India, every other nations are managing their waste disposal with care and responsibility. It is citizen s responsibility to sort the waste according to the requirements and the waste processed and converted into non harmful products as done in developed countries thus protecting the environment. In those countries there is severe penalties and punishments to those litter wastes and plastics on public places. When will we learn?

This mission is a failure. Laziness has caused all problems. It is better to go back to dust bins and the Municipality clears it daily so that cleanliness can be maintianed.Where the Lorrys bought 3 years ago have gone? How disposed off? Now every where gartbage on the roads, in the culverts and very few pieces are collected. it is a bad plan and therefore must be scrapped. The authority must own responsibiltiy for the bad service. When there is tax -surcharge colected along with property tax why you make residents pay for garbage removal? Then what is health services? Are you paying treatment for dengue or Maleria hospitalizaytion? No spraying or smoke demostrations are done unless complained? What the health Officers are doing? Where the funds alloted go? To the Drink Bottles? [ One spray medicine bought may be fetching 2-3 drink bottles! ] I have information that even Hotel bills and fish bills are denied to the vendors. It is a secret but high level of corruption. Can the Commissioner not check it?

Is it the commissioner s idea to privatize waste collection or any of the elected members sponsored it? Is it likely to be agree in the special meeting?
