M’lore: AIR protects cultural identity - Dr Vasantkumar Perla

Mangalore, 26 Sep 2014: ‘Classical music, which is perceived as the great face of our cultural identity would have been destroyed if there is no support from Akashavani. Indeed Akashavani is working as a great defender and harbinger of our culture,’ said Dr Vasanthkumar Perla, station director of All India Radio (AIR) Mangalore.
 
 
While delivering a special lecture on Radio Programme Production organized by the Communication Club of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, here on Friday September 26, Dr Perla opined that no other media are broadcasting the programmes addressing all subjects, formats and genders. AIR fulfill all aspects of information, education and entertainment. ‘There is a wrong notion among the people that Akashavani is fully a pro- government ideological tool. But in fact Akashavani and Doordarshan is working as a constructive catalyst in the society, he added.

 
Commenting on the recent trends in the media world, Dr Perla said that it is not the duty of a responsible medium to broadcast or publish the materials that promote superstition. Unfortunately many of our mainstream media are going after mere sensation. The duty of the media is to construct the society and not to destruct.

 

 
Answering to the queries of the students, he informed that Akashavani is providing abundance of opportunities for the students and younger generation to express their talents and brilliance through different programmes. ‘The only consideration is how you communicate with the audience. Since Akashavani is an audio medium, even a single word and its pronunciation are very important. Only continuous effort and practice can refine your voice culture. Daily practice will help to nurture and foster a perfect voice culture,’ explained Dr Perla.

 
Professor G P Shivram, chairman of department of mass communication and journalism said that journalism is not confined to a particular technology. ‘It includes different genres such as print, broadcasting and online technology. Mass Communication and Journalism students should try to equip anyone of these techniques,’ said Professor Dr Shivram. 

 
AIR programme officer Mangalore Naveen Kumar Kadri, Professor Waheeda Sultana, guest lecturers, research scholars and students were also present on the occasion.
