Mangalore: D C Ponnuraj given an emotional farewell

Mangalore, 27 October 2010: Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj was given an emotional farewell at the premises of DC office here on Tuesday, October 26. On the occasion, representatives of all the departments of the district lauded the efficiency, transparency, farsightedness, commitment and people-friendly measures undertaken by him here during his tenure.
Humbly accepting dozens of floral bouquets gifted to him by the officials and representatives of various departments, Ponnuraj said: “Everybody gives credit to me although it’s a team work. I would never forget the trust, love, affection and cooperation extended by the people of this district in my life.”
“Yes, what I have done is a source of satisfaction for me. But, I did not play the role of a one man army. Many of my dreams came true only because of the kind support and cooperation I received from the people and officials,” he said adding that at the end of the day, he would ask himself how he spent the day.
“At this grateful moment, as I happily leave this district, I would like to recall my association with Superintendent of Police A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao and recently transferred Inspector General of Police (western range) Gopal B Hosur.”, he said.
Recalling his initial days in Dakshina Kannada, Ponnuraj said: “When I landed in Mangalore as the 120th Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, there was turbulent situation in the city. Now, this is a peaceful city. People have understood that they should not give room for a negative image of Mangalore to prevail. I hope, Mangalore will remain peaceful forever”, Ponnuraj said.
Applauding the reformation and development work carried out by his predecessor, Subodh Yadav, the new DC of the district said that the achievements of Ponnuraj have increased his responsibility.
In his presidential remarks Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat Shivashankar said that Ponnuraj is a true model for all DCs and government officials. Admiring Ponnuraj’s farsighted plans, he said that despite being transferred to another district, the he would be remembered in Dakshina Kannada for decades to come.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma, in his welcome address recalling his association with the outgoing DC, dedicated a few tears to him.
MCC Commissioner KN Vijayprakash, PWD Engineer Balasubrahmanya, Kannada activist Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, thinker Keshavadharani, and President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mohandas also spoke. Udupi Deputy Commissioner and Ponnuraj’s wife P Hemalatha, DCP R Ramesh and Additional SP Prabhakar were among those present.
Ponnuraj who had taken over as the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada on January 5, 2009, has recently been transferred to Shimoga, the home district of Chief Minster BS Yeddyurappa.
