Udupi, 14 September 2010: Udupi city is undergoing rapid urbanisation process aiding all round civic infrastructural facilities. City Municipality Corporation’s proposed plans to give new look to existing infrastructure has made way for the renovation of existing fish markets and introduction of new ones.

Development of Udupi Fish Market through Fish Market Federation and also renovation of the daily market at Vishweshwarayya complex tops the list of developments.

The present fish markets in the city are not spacious enough to tap large scale business. Accordingly a new fish market is being envisioned at Adi Udupi.

Speaking to City Herald, CMC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak informed that the new market at Adi Udupi is being developed at a cost of Rs 1 crore. The fund is allocated through Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Town Development Programme (CMSMTDP). Basement and ground floor set up will be introduced in the initial phase in the market, he added.

Survey has been done following, which the blue print for the structure has been prepared. Works are taken up for executing the plans as per the scheduled outlay. Tender for the same will be called in couple of days, he said.

Future plans comprise lots of sophisticated innovative projects. The new fish markets will be provided with modern storage boxes. Fisherwomen will provided with locker facility to store unsold fishes. Currently the wholesale trades between fishermen and fish merchants or fish marketing to attract individual customers, retail fish markets are all clubbed in to a single outlet of open market.

The trenches accommodating flow of waste water in the existing fish markets calls for immediate attention. These drainage are in bad condition. Improper channelling of accumulated waste water creates foul smell in the area. All these problems need to be set right. The fish markets in Udupi are mess owing to all these problems.

Nayak said these problems will be taken into consideration once the work begins. Attempts will be made for an overall upgradation, he said.

The platinum jubilee celebrations of CMC facilitated the announcement of host of development programmes carving a new phase in the process of offering full fledged civic amenities. Most of the programmes are in the initial process and need couple of months to turn out into reality. However, days are not far for the fish markets in Udupi to get a face-lift flaunting a brand new appearance.
