M’lore: MSF International Volunteer visits Yenepoya University

Mangalore, 23 Jul 2014: Dr Alan De Lima Pereira, an International Volunteer with Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors without borders) visited Yenepoya University here on Tuesday July 22, to share his experience of working with MSF in conflict areas like South Sudan and Ethiopia where healthcare was delivered with limited resources.
Monika JP, India HR for MSF New Delhi office accompanied Dr Alan Pereira and they interacted with MBBS students, postgraduates in the discipline of community medicine, faculties and other invitees. The session was organized under the National Service Scheme (NSS), Yenepoya University.
Dr Alan spoke on how Kala-azar a disease not so common in this part of the world is very rampant in areas and belts of African region. He urged young medical graduates to take up a line less travelled instead of a stereotype process that currently exists.
Monika JP highlighted how MSF responds during disasters and also in areas where health remains inaccessible due to lack of socio-political will and human resources.
Several questions were raised to further magnify the interaction by Dr R P Pai, Professor, Dept of Community Medicine, Yenepoya University, who was also former Consultant WHO-SEARO.
NSS co-ordinator and faculty of anatomy department Dr Ashwini Shetty has co-ordinated the proceeding of the day.
