Mangalore: City Airport Customs seize gold pieces & granules worth Over Rs 24 lac

Mangalore, 19 Mar 2014: The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) once again thwarted an attempt of smuggling of gold and seized gold pieces and granules, totally weighing 800.600 grams and valued at Rs 24,09,806 concealed in 4 Lux brand bath soaps and one American Garden brand chocolate syrup bottle from the possession of a passenger named Abdul Gafoor aged about 30 years, who is a resident of Melangady House, Manjeshwar Post, Bangaramanjeshwar, Kasargod district of Kerala and arrived at MIA on Tuesday March 19 at about 7.30am by Air India Express (AIE) flight IX 814 from Dubai. Abdul Gafoor was arrested later and produced before the Magistrate. Further investigations are under way.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, assistant commissioner of customs, MIA and were led by B Prabhakar Poojary, superintendent along with superintendents Lionel N Fernandes, Sendhil Murugan, B A Kariappa, H G Yogesh and inspectors G Kumaraswamy, Preeti Suma, S Ranjan Bangera and Ankit Kumar and Hawaldar Gulabi.
Further, the commissioner of customs, D Purushottam expressed his deep concern regarding the increasing trends in smuggling and directed the officers to intensify the vigilance and surveillance and crack the attempts made by the unscrupulous elements who are indulging in these activities.
