Mangalore: More Colleges of Mangalore University to Include Konkani in Curriculum

Mangalore, Dec 5, 2013 : Konkani studies have reached a significant stage, wherein it will be taught in 4 colleges besides 3 colleges that are already teaching it. It’s a major step indeed, for other colleges to follow the suit. If we can teach French; why not Konkani? We have encouraged Konkani studies in curriculum so far and we will do so in the future too, said Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore diocese.
Bishop Dr Aloysius was speaking after felicitating the principals of Colleges who have come forward to teach Konkani in curriculum, during a function jointly organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, here on Wednesday December 4.
Bishop Dr Aloysius felicitated Rosario Pre-University College principal Fr Alwyn Serrao, Padua Pre-University College principal Fr Michael Santhumayor, Pompeii College principal Dr Clarence Miranda, St Aloysius College Konkani teacher Wilma Coutinha on the same occasion.
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy past president Kasargod Chinna Government B Ed College principal Philomena Lobo, entrepreneur – Konkani activist Eric Correa, Mangalore Pradesh Catholic Sabha president Nigel Pereira, Academy registrar Dr Devdas Pai were present at the dais.
Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino in his introductory address said that Konkani has been taught so far from Class VI to Class X. The students are appearing for Konkani annual exams since the past 3 years. It’s being taught in St Aloysius College till degree. As per the state government order, other colleges affiliated to Mangalore University are eligible to teach Konkani. It’s not applicable to all Pre-University Colleges which has to be resolved at the earliest, said Castelino.
Professor Steven Quadros explained the progress in Konkani studies so far and what got to be done ahead.
