Mangalore, 11 Nov 2013: It was a memorable day for the city of Managlore and for the visually challenged children of Roman and Catherine School, here.
The participants from Mangalore, Bangalore and Chikmagalur took part in ‘BMW – Navnit Motors Guiding Stars 2013,’ the annual Mangalore Coastal Round Table (MCRT) Treasure Hunt, which was flagged off by state health minister U T Khader, here on Sunday morning.
The drivers were faced with a challenge of navigating solely with the guidance of visually challenged children. So how is this possible?
The children of Roman and Catherine School sat alongside these enthusiastic car drivers trying to decode a set of clues given to them. The uniqueness of the treasure hunt is that only the visually challenged navigator can read these clues that are provided in Braille. In the process, the children picked 3 treasures and made new friends, all the while enjoying the breeze on the drive.
It was the fourth consecutive year that MCRT has organized this event successfully. With over 120 participants, this was the highest participation from the public as compared to previous years.
Kannur corporator Sudhir Shetty was also present.
The minister U T Khader recognized the contribution of Round Table towards the specially-abled children and also his own experience as a participant in events like these. He also conveyed his appreciation of the fact that the treasure hunt highlighted the abilities of the visually challenged. He finally congratulated the MCRT on the work done and wished them the best for the future.
MCRT chairman Neil Rodrigues further explained the significance of the event in terms of awareness of the capabilities of the visually challenged and the specially-abled people overall.
BMW dealer Navnit Motors was the chief partner of the event along with MCRT.
The winners of the event were Vasudev Kamath and team, with navigator Anvith after decoding 31 clues successfully. The runners-up of the event were Sanjay Kamath and team with navigators Bhavya and Mohammed Kaif after decoding 28 clues.
The children concluded their day with a sumptuous food musical programme at Gandhi Park here.
