Mangalore:  12 Oct, 2013 : “Today every parent intends to make his child a doctor or an engineer.  Nobody is interested in values and service.  Making a fortune out of clients’ mis-fortune become a practice to a lawyer and making money from patients suffering become a profession to a doctor.  There is a need of changing the Mark-sit based  education system”  said Dr. Derek Lobo (Retd. United Nations – World Health Organization Regional Adviser, Targeted for Elimination/Eradition of Leprosy & other Diseases).

He was addressing a Symposium  on Role of Values and Service in Business Management held at Rosario Cathedral Hall, Mangalore under the ageis of Integral Yoga Satsangha and Mangalore Diocesan Chair in Christianity in coordination with St. Joseph College, Jeppu, Padua College, Nantoor and Rosario College, Bolar.

Dr. Lobo further said it is high time we should think about bring in a change in the pre-occupation of examination system in education.  He said that education is important but not marks.  Today in Amireca no employer looks at the marks card and degree certificate. Employees are selected on the basis of skill/personality grading.

Responding to the clarion call given by Yogacharya V L Rego to start an institution exclusively to teach Values and Services, Dr. Lobo strongly advocated to have a department for values and service in each and every educational institution, though informally. Dr. Lobo citing examples of Bill Gates, Dhirubai Ambani categorically said though they were college dropout excelled in life.

Yogacharya V L Rego briefed about the dynamics of symposium.  He said today every employer prefers a loyal person and a person of integrity.  In this situation values , services and holistic health  of a person becomes important.  Today we find many colleges teaching medicine, engineering and management but there is no college or institution teaching values and services in the world.  Lack of Seva Manobava has resulted in the deterioration of values in the society.  Today everybody wants money and no one cares for values in life.

Recalling his student days in Padua School Yogacharya V L Rego said in the year 1956 creating nuisance in the hostel room was treated as problem of students. Thirty years after, in the year 1986, abortion, teenage pregnancies, drugs became problem of students.  It is shocking to note that today a  Principal of the college hacked to death by students for taking disciplinary action against them.
