Mangalore, 11 Oct 2013: A eminent team of orthopedic surgeons of Father Muller Medical College Hospital performed a rare surgery in restoring the amputated leg at the ankle of a forty-five-year-old Sivanna, a native of Arakalagudu, Sakleshpur taluk, during three-hour prolonged surgery, here on Friday October 11.

Sivanna, a worker at a tea estate in Dodabalia taluk since 5 years, amputated his left leg at the ankle while working on a lawnmower on Monday October 7.

The victim reported to Father Muller Charitable Institution after 24 hours following injury. Immediately the patient was attended to, followed by the 3 hours of prolonged surgery by the eminent team of surgeons of Father Muller Charitable Institution which was headed by Dr Lathesh Latheef, Assistant Professor, department of orthopedics.

When approached Dr Lathesh Latheef, he said, ‘When the patient was brought to the hospital his condition was critical. Both the arteries of the leg were totally damaged and only the posterior part of the leg was attached. But after the operation the veins and arteries are connected and the patient is recuperating.  He will take about six months to recover completely as the nerve has to grow,’ said Dr Lathesh.

Shivanna’s son Murthy said, ‘The patient was immediately taken to the Government Hospital but as there were no required facilities   he was shifted to the District Hospital. After bandaging he was brought to a hospital in Mangalore, where after examining the case which was very critical he was referred to Father Muller Charitable Institution, said Murthy.

Murthy further said, ‘Looking at the gravity of the injury all our family members felt it was very difficult for my father to get back to normalcy. But we are totally satisfied with the treatment received in Father Muller. We are also grateful for giving the best treatment in concessional rate,’ said Murthy.

These kinds of rare operation in the hospital are conducted by eminent surgeons when such mishap takes place. Father Muller Medical College Hospital provides specialized treatment with latest technology to meet the needs of the patient.
