M’lore: Father Muller College of Nursing Organizes Workshop on Physical Assessment of Childhoo

Mangalore,10 Oct 2013: The department of pediatric nursing and M Sc nursing of Father Muller College of Nursing organized a regional workshop on ‘Physical Assessment of Childhood Period’ at conference hall, here on Thursday October 10.
Child care measures are very critical in the early days so as to have better future for the child. When our country is facing the problem of malnutrition this kind of programme comes with valuable meaning. This programme aims at training the participants to acquire skills on physical assessment of all pediatric age group including newborn, infant, toddler, preschooler and older children. It also focuses on helping them to acquire physical skill in physical examination at clinical setup.
Father Muller Charitable Institutions director Fr Patrick Rodrigues presided the programme.
Father Muller College of Nursing principal Sr Winnifred D’ Souza, organizing secretary M Malarvizhi, were present on the dais.
Fr Patrick Rodrigues while addressing the gathering said, ‘Child is a unique gift of God. In the health sector the nurses are the one who give the primary care. Children are sensitive, apprehensive and cannot express, therefore it is a challenging task to approach, deal, diagnose and understand them. The attitude towards the child in approaching and diagnosing beyond physical ailment that the child needs becomes very important,’ said Fr Patrick.
Fr Patrick further said, ‘As nurses it is your responsibility to identify what is wrong and find out an immediate relief which will show how equipped, skilful, knowledgeable and capable you are at the primary care,’ said Fr Patrick.
Speaking on the occasion, Sr Winifred D’ Souza said, ‘A child’s health depends on the effective strategies that are based on holistic approach. Physical assessment is one of the integrated approaches. It is necessary to give correct nursing diagnosis depending on the age and the need of the child. To. This workshop is a platform which will provide the participants with necessary training required to acquire the skills which will make them efficient and effective nursing professionals,’ said Sr Winifred.
The workshop was carried into 4 sessions by the eminent doctors, Dr Pavan Hegde, HOD of pediatrics, Father Muller Medical College, Dr Chandrashekar G S, Associate Professor, department of pediatrics, A J Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Manas S, Assistant Professor, department of pediatrics, Yenepoya Medical College.
The workshop proved to be very informative and interactive as it touched on topics like physical assessment of newborn, toddler and older children. In the fourth session, practical training was given to the participants by the postgraduates of the department of pediatrics which gave them a better understanding about the clinical setup.
