Moodubelle, 09 Sep 2013: The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Moodubelle Unit organized a unique Talents Day on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Monthi Festh) on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 3.30 to 8.30 pm with a pleasant blending of tradition and modernity in the Parish Hall witnessed by the capacity crowd that enjoyed every moment of the evening.  There was no formal stage programme and the entire time was devoted to the ‘Vovyo’ competition, distribution of prizes to the winners of various games conducted by the ICYM on previous Sundays and presentation of the variety programme by the children, youth and adults.

Three groups participated in the ‘vovyo’ competition.  While two groups, with appropriate logistics such as marriage mandap (matov) and ‘vojem’ procession conducted the entire marriage ceremony (except nuptials) with appropriate ‘vovyos’ right from the roce to the send off of the bride (opsun diunchem) and also ‘Laudate ….”, one group started the ‘vovyo’ with the bridegroom proceeding  to the church for the nuptials and the remaining part of the marriage ceremony. It was indeed a nostalgic exercise which reminded many elderly people of their own marriages.  Michael Rodrigues  from Sasthan,  Mrs. Asumpta D’Souza from  Shankerpura and Anil Danti were the judges of the competition. Each group was given 30 minutes for the competition including putting up the logistics and singing appropriate vovyos at different stages in the marriage ceremony.

Anil Danti, one of the judges expressed his feelings regarding the competition and said that more and more people should come forward to participate in such programmes to keep alive our rich culture, customs and traditions. The judges were presented with the mementos by the priests of the parish.

Following the end of  the ‘vovyo’ singing competition, children, youth and adults presented variety entertainment programme which included dances- group as well as solo, skits and  group as well as duet and solo songs.

The students of the Assisi Minor Seminary, Nalku Beedhi presented a group song, mixed dance and a skit based on one of the passages of the Gospel in which Jesus gives sight to blind Barthimew.  Another skit titled “Modern Prodigal Son” adapted the parable of the “Prodigal Son” from the New Testament  to the modern  times. There was also a hilarious skit acted and directed by Maxim D’Sa.

In between the programme prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted by the ICYM during the previous Sundays were distributed by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Fr. Paul Sequeira, Fr. Raj, Fr. Robert Lasrado (OFM-Cap) and Alphonse K. Alva, Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council. Rohan D’Souza, member of the ICYM read the list of the prize winners.

During this occasion, Dr. (Mrs.)  Priya Castelino, daughter of Peter and Helen Lobo of Moodubelle  was felicitated  for her achievement of acquiring Ph.D. degree in Mathematics in January 2013.  The felicitation was conducted by Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes in the presence of Fr. Paul Sequeira, Fr. Raj, Fr. Robert Lasrado, superior of the Loreto Convent, Sr. Irene, Alphonse K. Alva and Mrs. Jacinta D’Souza, President and Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council and Nevin Castelino, husband of Mrs. Priya Castelino. The citation was read by Gladson Alva.

Following the felicitation, Dr. Priya Castelino  in a voice filled with gratitude and emotion said that she valued the support of her family, especially her mother, uncles and aunts for the education that she received. Though she had a strong desire to do research for Ph.D. degree, she could not do so before her marriage due to the difficult financial condition of the family.  She further said that, after her marriage to Nevin Castelino of Shankerpura, it was chiefly due to his encouragement and support of her mother-in-law that she could fulfill her dream of getting the Ph.D. degree. She also gratefully recalled the inspiration of her aunt who was the Principal in one of the Colleges in Bangalore who had also acquired Ph.D. in Mathematics. Presently, Dr. Priya Castelino is a lecturer in the Engineering College at Bantakal.

In her message to the youth, Dr. Priya Castelino said that the youth should  believe in hard work, dedication and honesty and also they should develop an attitude of respect to their parents and elders. Further she said that parents always wish and pray for the good of their children and do all types of sacrifices for their success. Children should be grateful to their parents and take their advice in good spirit and right earnest.

In between the programme, Power Point presentation prepared by the ICYM member Joyson Menezes was arranged highlighting the various activities of the ICYM Unit of Moodubelle.

The entire programme was compeered by Lloyd Rebello, Maxim D’Sa, Doyline Monis, Renol Rodrigues and Royline Rodrigues.

At the end of the variety entertainment programme, the results of the ‘Vovyo’ competition was declared.
