Mangalore: Go Green Campaign Kicks-off with Laksha Vraksha Programme in City

Mangalore, 02 August : Dakshina Kannada (DK) district working journalists’ Association observed Vanamahotsav, in association with Mangarlore range forest department at Kadri Park here on Friday August 2.
The state forest, environ and DK district-in-charge minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated the Vanamahotsav, go green drive, a by symbolically planting a sapling on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion minister Rai appreciated the environmental concern of journalists, which is effective in creating general awareness. He also urged the people, to nurse the plants after being planted to see, it grows to be tall trees. Thanking the journalist Association for organizing the event, he said it is the responsibility of every citizen to protect the environment.
The minister Rai further said, ‘I have started the state-level, ‘Laksha Vraksha Abhiyan’ – a campaign to plane 1 lac saplings.’ He urged the institutions, organizations and every citizen to join hands with the forest department to make this project most successful, urged minister Rai.
Lamenting over axing thousands of trees to facilitate building and road widening projects, minister Rai said, ‘it was essential to balance the ecosystem. To survive we need food, likewise for a good health we need fresh air. If we plant trees and take care of them, we will get fresh air to breathe,’ said minister Rai.
The Mangalore range assistant conservator of forests Clifford Lobo, journalists’ fraternity also joined in planting the saplings at the Kardi Park.
DK district working journalists’ Association president Harish Rai, welcomed the gathering.
