  • Thenka Yermal, Malpe shores worst affected as sea erosion intensifies

 

Udupi, 26 July 2013: The district administration has declared holiday to all schools and colleges across the district on July 27 following heavy rains. The district recorded 79.86 mm rain in the last 24 hours.

 

Udupi taluk received 54.4 mm rainfall, Karkala taluk recorded 81.8 mm rain and Kundapur taluk received 103.4 mm rainfall respectively.

 

In Udupi taluk, the house of one Sharada Poojary in Alevoor village was damaged following heavy rain coupled with wind. In Padur village, the house belonging to Sundari Mulya was damaged when a tree fell on it. In Innanje village, the walls of the house of one Bhoja were damaged. The sea erosion menace continued to affect the shore in the taluk in areas like Thenka Yermal and Malpe. Coconut trees of Vishwanath Kotiyan in Thenka village were uprooted owing to intensified sea-erosion menace.

 

In Kutpadi village, the house of Appi Suvarna collapsed owing to heavy rains. The cement shed of Anganavadi centers in Kutpadi flew following heavy wind in the area. In Heradi village, a house belonging to Deva Shetty was partially damaged.

 

In Karkala taluk, the roof of the house of one Sampa Sapaliga was damaged. In Kundapur, the house belonging to Chandrasekhar Shetty was damaged in Gulvadi village. In Hardalli-Mandalli village, the house of one Chiru Kulalthi was damaged. In Shedimane village the house of Girijamma Shedhti was partially damaged.

 

Sea erosion

The sea erosion in Thenka Yermal in Padubidri has intensified and has even expanded to Uchila Bada village, by swallowing more number of coconut trees on Friday. A total of 14 coconut trees belonging to Thenka villagers were washed away due to sea erosion, while, a few more trees are on the verge of being washed away.

 

The fisheries road in Thenka has been partially collapsed, causing an obstacle to the construction of retaining wall. Over 250 coconut trees in Thenka have been washes away in the sea water in last one month. The sea erosion has also damaged fisheries road in four to five places. The work on dumping boulders to prevent sea erosion has been going on in full swing despite the obstacles, and over 10 loads of boulders have been dumped already.

 

A huge trench has been created at Thottam where UPCL pipeline has been laid, making the sea erosion spread towards the houses. As the trucks can not travel on this road due to erosion, the boulders have been dumped where the road ends. Several houses in this area are facing danger.

 

On the other hand, villagers led by Mogaveera Sabha, offered prayers to sea at Bhajana Mandira, hoping for the sea to turn normal.    People are assembling in large numbers in Yermal to view the high tides and sea erosion.

 

In Baindoor

The flooding of Sowparnika river is posing threat to the lives of farmers and people residing in low lying areas in Baindoor. As the river flooded on Thursday night, the water surrounded low lying areas on Friday. Villages including Herur, Navunda, Badakere, Maravanthe, Nada, Hadav, Senapur, Hosadu are flood affected. Villages have turned peninsula and paddy fields are covered by water. People are dependent on boats to come out of the villages.
