Mangalore, 25 Jul 2013: The visitors and the patients spent anxious moments being stuck nearly 25 minutes in the elevator at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Hospital here on Wednesday July 24 morning.

Over 20 passengers were in the elevator of KMC Hospital, located at Dr A B Ambedkar roundabout, here, when the elevator abruptly stopped between the floors owing to technical difficulty.  The passengers had anxious moments for nearly 25 minutes.  A passenger among them called the maintenance personnel and all are rescued. Since there were a few little children among the passengers, chaos prevailed.  All passengers were rescued, when the fire brigade arrived at the scene.

It’s not the first time snag:

The relatives of a few terminally ill patient at KMC Hospital said that its not the first time the snag was detected in this elevator.  Although it was reported to the management, it was not resolved.  The foreman alleges that it was due to overload the elevator stopped abruptly while going up.  Meanwhile, the elevator is equipped with bleeps that will go on in case the elevator is overloaded.  The elevator operators argue that if the elevators are overloaded, the doors will not close at all.

The blame lies on the management for repeated such snags in the elevator.  It seemed the management had tried to cover such incidents in the past.  A few staff of hospital tried to hinder a cameraman while clicking some pictures.  Meanwhile, the foreman instead of restoring the working of elevator found to be unnecessarily blaming the security men.  The visitors to in-patient ward and out-patient vent their anger, for the poor quality of most reputed hospital in city that is playing on their lives.  The authorities are expected to restore elevators that always function smoothly, without causing hindrance to innumerable visitors at the hospital.

Thank god nothing happened to personal life due to suffocation. Since this is getting repeated, the elevator maintenance team should check thoroughly the mechanical faults of the elevator of these high rise buildings. I heard that there was a tilt in the elevator shaft around 20 years back during construction due to the ground settlement. So it is necessary for the building management team to investigate thorougly and find out the real cause of these frequest problems/flaws.
