Mangalore, 28 May 2013 : The monsoon arrived in the undivided Dakshina Kannada with torrential rains coupled with gales, thunder and lightning on Sunday May 26 night. The nearly two-hour duration of rain indeed cooled the soaring temperatures. The late night shoppers in the city malls and diners had to wait till rains subsided at about10.45 pm on Sunday.
The people heaved a sigh of relief after suffering from unbearable heat in this part of the world which has seen steady rise in mercury over the years. The last recorded temperature in city was 37 degree Celsius.
The rains also lashed across the city on Tuesday May 28 throughout the day with a few intervals. The flash floods are witnessed in low-lying areas across the city and on the roads. The un-cleared drains ahead of rains on a few stretch of roads filled with stagnant water.
A state-owned bus hit the barrier at Kuloor, here at the wee hours of Tuesday May 28. It would have been a major tragedy had it been occurred on the bridge that lies a few meters away on National Highway 66.
The monsoon season indeed is a nightmare on the stretch of highway from Mangalore to Udupi, where private express buses ply with a little frequency. The slippery highway causes series of road mishap involving motorcyclists and other road users. The uprooting of trees that survived four-lane conversion is a gross concern for security agencies especially during monsoon. The caution is essential more during monsoon while motoring in undivided Dakshina Kannada district along with long haulers.
