Udupi, 13 May 2013: The chief cause for declining student strength in Kannada medium schools is due to not appointing eligible teachers and not imparting quality education, analyzed Nitte University chancellor N Vinay Hegde.
Vinay Hegde was speaking during the golden jubilee of S V S Pre-University College alumni Association, Katpady, near here on Saturday May 10.
The present education system has failed to make better citizens. The medium of education is not essential for the growth of an individual. Its irony that Kannadigas prefer to speak in broken English, Marathi, Tamil etc, but does not wish to talk in Kannada. The service-minded teachers were opting for the profession in the past, while at the changed circumstances individuals choose the profession as a means to earn living. The parents prefer to send their children to English medium schools paying exorbitant fees. In spite of the Kannada medium schools try their best to retain the students by offering free education, mid-day meals, books, uniforms, bicycles, transport, etc, it has not worked to their favour. Its because of competitiveness in providing infrastructure the English medium schools succeeded in taking a major share of students, said Vinay Hegde.
