Udupi, 12 May 2013: Till about a month ago, the people across the district were discussing who would win the assembly elections. When the results were announced, the people were discussing the reasons for victory and defeat of a certain candidate. Meanwhile, the discussions are under way who would become the minister from Udupi district.
There are four ministerial aspirants among the three newly-elected MLAs and a MLC. Nonetheless, only one will get such chance. Meanwhile, the discussions are underway who will be the most fortunate one.
Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary, Kau MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, Udupi MLA Pramod Madwaraj and MLC Pratapchandra Shetty are in the race of ministerial berth.
Although each one is saying it’s up to high command to give ministerial berth, each one has the aspiration to become ministers and are making efforts in their own way, by shuttling between New Delhi and Bangalore.
MLA Gopal Poojary is also president of Udupi District Congress Committee (DCC) and is the lone MLA who won for successive three times. It would be a plus point for him to become a minister. Moreover, he belongs to Billava community that is in significant numbers in the district. It’s another factor in his favour to become a minister. Whether all these prerequisites will make him a minister? It seems difficult to say.
Vinay Kumar Sorake was elected as MLA twice from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district and elected as MP from Udupi. He has won the recently held assembly elections from Kaup. He also belongs to Billava community. He is serving as AICC secretary. He is better placed to become a minister.
Pramod Madwaraj who won from Udupi as first time MLA with a margin of 39,000 votes against BJP also fulfills the basic requirement to become a minister.
Pratapchandra Shetty, the four-times MLA and twice MLC, KPCC vice president, close associate of Oscar Fernandes also in the race for ministerial berth.
Sorake gets nod from high command?
He has gotten the party ticket to contest in the recently held assembly election out of 16 aspirants, by drawing his influence in the party’s higher rungs. None can deny, he will be able to get his way similarly.
Sorake has chosen to contest in Kaup, Udupi district, with his eyes on ministerial berth, as it was difficult with the heavy weight six-time elected MLA Ramanat Rai in Dakshina Kannada district. If Ramanat Rai who hails from Bunts community gets ministerial post from Dakshina Kannada district, Sorake who hails from Billava community will have no obstacles to become minister from Udupi district.
