Udupi: Constituency-wise Voters’ Turnout in 5 Constituencies of District

Udupi, 07 May 2013 : Out of 8,73,832 total number of voters, 6,65,644 voters cast their votes, that amounts to 76.18 percent.  Its during the assembly elections in 2008, the voters turnout recorded was 75.63 percent. when compared with the recent and last assembly elections, this time the increase in voters turnout was just 0.55 percent, quite below the expectation. 


The chairman of district SWEEP Committee forecasted 85 percent voters turnout in the assembly elections held on Sunday May 5, which has gone wrong.  SWEEP programme that was embarked on by spending huge amount has not yielded desired results.


Constituency-wise voters’ turnout:


Byndoor – out of 1,94,841 voters 1,47,459 voters cast their votes (voters turnout 75.68 percent), Kundapur – out of 1,81,890 voters 1,38,107 cast their votes (voters turnout 75.93 percent), Udupi – out of 1,80,780 voters 1,37,199 voters cast their votes (voters turnout 75.89 percent), Kaup – out of 1,55,381 voters 1,13,221 votes cast their votes (voters turnout 72.86 percent), Karkal – out of 1,60,940 voters 1,29,658 voters cast their votes (voters turnout 76.18 percent).


The naxal affected villages in Karkal, Kundapur and Byndoor constituencies registered 80 percent voters turnout.

 

 

The highest voters turn was registered at the polling center located at Government Lower Primary School, Bangarugudde, Hebri in Kakal taluk of entire Udupi district; the least was registered at the polling center in Hindustani Higher Primary School, Byndoor in the entire Udupi district.

 

Votes count to begin at 8.00am on Wednesday May 8

 

A total of 1,038 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that are transported in high security vans from across 5 legislative assembly constituencies of district are stored in T A Pai English Medium School, Kunjibettu, here on Sunday May 5 night and are guarded by the armed guards of central paramilitary force.


The votes count will begin on Wednesday May 8 at 8.00am there itself.  The furniture are provided at the venue, besides security arrangements were made to maintain law and order during the poll count, said Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Dr M T Reju.


22 voters officially denied to vote:


Twenty-two voters of Udupi district filled up the form 49 (O) to express their desire not to vote in the assembly election on Sunday May 5.  It’s the record of sort in the history of district that so many people filled up the form 49 (O) as not to participate in the voting.

 

These twenty-two voters have gone to their respective polling centers and filled up the form, as they did not wish to vote for any candidate by actively participating in voting.

That the Naxals have been rejected is evidenced by higher than average voter turnout in their strongholds. The Indian citizen is not for violent overthrow of democratic system. He is also not easily scared.
