Udupi: Students of Milagres College & Spoortidama urge DC to Rehabilitate Street Children

Udupi, 6 Apr 2013: The students of Milagres College, Kallianpur and Spoortidama – orphanage, Koteshwar urged Deputy Commissioner to rescue and rehabilitate the street children who are in distress.
The students presented a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner stating that the child labourers are working in remote villages, bus stands, factories in the fisheries ports of Malpe and Ganglli. A few children are begging in nearby Sri Krishna mutt and city bus stand. As per the child Act of 2000 and 2005, street children below the age of 18 years had to be rescued and rehabilitated, as stated in the memorandum.
The student’s representative Dhananjay Bhatrahalli, Spoortidhama – orphanage chief trustee Keshav Koteshwar, Milagres College lecturers Sr Lilly, Pushpa and Rayan Mathias, MSw students and inmates of Spoortidhama were present at the occasion.
The copies of memorandum were presented to officers of ZP, district labour department, district women and child welfare department, district social welfare department, district children rescue unit, public instructions department.
Deputy Commissioner Dr M T Reju assured them that the department officers will take appropriate action on rescuing the children begging in streets.
