Dubai, 24 March 2013: St. Mary’s Konkan Community (SMKC) is one of the premier associations who pledged to cater to the needs of the downtrodden and less privileged children for their educational needs back home in Mangalore. Lenten season is one of the great season to follow in the path of Jesus Christ and continue His mission on this earth. SMKC is the first one to take initiative under the leadership of their dynamic President Ms. Veronica Rego, during this Lenten Season as they organized a very noble cause of visiting the workers at the Al Quoz Labour camp in Dubai and spend the precious time with them and entertain them under the banner ‘ SMKC CARES.
Under the leadership of Veronica Rego, last year SMKC successfully conducted Decennial Celebrations with a Wilfy Rebimbus musical troupe to pay a great respect to the legendary Konkani singers titled: “Konkan Showers” which attended by a large crowd and was very successful event. They have also conducted the picnic and other community activities as part of their Decennial Celebrations.
The visit visit to the Labour Camp was organised on Friday, 22nd March 2013 to one of the largest Labour Camp at Al Quoz as one of the philanthropy programs of SMKC Dubai to reach out to our brethren in one of the Labour Camps (SEVILLE products camp) in Dubai to meet estimated 750 people. Though the camp accommodates thousand plus employees, estimated 750 workers took part in the evening program conducted by SMKC.
In U.A.E. getting permission to enter the Labour Camps is not a easy task but SMKC managed to Convince the government officials and as they say “ If there is Will , there is a Way “, they got the passing thru many major hurdles in obtaining permission approvals, The members of SMKC visited the camp at about 5.00pm with loads of guddies, gifts to cheer the workers who work hard and hardly meet outside people. It is tragic story at the Labour Camps as they eat same type of food every day, no family, no friends to visit them and earning meager salary just enough to support their families back home. SMKC members spent some quality time with them by providing them some good entertainment and food.
Emcee of the day Godwin took charge of the games and entertainment session and organized a a few entertaining games to make these workers happy, feel at home and prizes were distributed to the winners.
After a brief introduction of our Association a group games were conducted such as making Burj-Kalifa Tower in balloons, bombing the city, etc in which all the workers fully took part enthusiastically and enjoyed the games.
Secondly, there was a talent wherein they could exhibit their talents and it was a great moment a few singers came forward and sang beautiful Hindi and Bengali songs and also danced to the tunes of Bollywood numbers and enjoyed a lot. The best dancers were selected and given away with prizes.
A few spot prizes were also conducted on SMKC theme and UAE in general and at the end Housie-Housie game was conducted and winers were given away with loads of prizes. One of the prominent member Bhaskar proposed the vote of thanks. Dinner packets were served to all those attended the programme .
It was indeed a great day to be rmembered not only by the workers but SMKC members, feeling of great satisfaction of looking after the less privileged and knowing that a great mission was completed as part of this Lenten Season. SMKC showed that it really CARES for the less fortunate and downtrodden. A great noble cause indeed.
The program ended at about 8:30pm and it was supported by main sponsor SCOTT BADER Middle East and gift sponsors namely E-Max, Spinneys, Al Sharq Al Aqsa Trading and SAPIL.
