Mangalore: International air cargo complex is now a reality

Mangalore, 18 Mar 2013: The international air cargo complex at the old terminal of the Mangalore Airport was inaugurated by  Ajith Singh, Union Civil Aviation Minister on March 18, Monday.

 

In his address, Singh said  the complex   is housed in an area of 1400 square meters and is electronically equipped with a centralized cargo server at Kolkata. Singh said  such complexes already exist in Trichy and Coimbatore and added the Mangalore complex will be linked to cities like Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata.

 

 

The complex is equipped with standard  storage facilities to handle valuable and perishable products, he informed.

 

He said the annual holding capacity of the complex was 5000 metric tonnes of international import cargo, 13000 metric tonnes of export cargo, 18000 metric tonnes of domestic tin bound cargo and 21000 metric tonnes of domestic outbound cargo.

 

On the future projects, he said there were plans to extend the runway of the airport upto 3400 meters, to enable landing of Boeing 747. The project will require  285 acres of land and will cost Rs 250 crores, the Minister said and added it was in the planning stage.

 

M Veerappa Moily, Union Petroleum Minister also spoke on the occasion. Jayaprakash Hegde, MP, Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha MP, Abhayachandra Jain, UT Khader,MLAs,Ramanatha Rai, District Congress President and J.T. Radhakrishna, Director, Mangalore International Airport,  were among others present.
