Mangalore: Inter-Collegiate Workshop on ‘Women Rights in Emerging Era’ Held in City

Mangalore, 13 Mar 2013: The Women’s Cell and National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Government First Grade College, Kavoor, here organized one-day Mangalore University l inter-collegiate workshop on Women Rights in the Emerging Era to commemorate the International Women’s Day on Tuesday March 12.

 

The local corporator Madhukiran K was the chief guest, inaugurated the workshop here on Tuesday morning.

 

Dr Shridhara Maniyani, principal of Government First Grade College presided the function.

 

Chandrakala Nandavara, retired professor and Kannada litterateur in her keynote address to the students urged them to be confident and work towards their aim. 

 

 

Chandrakala Nandavara said, ‘All of us are infinite treasures and blessed with many talents.  She also said that we need to bring changes in our life; the younger generation.’

 

The first session of the day planned for the students began with a talk on Women Safety by Manjula Shetty, lecturer of Government Teachers Education College, here.

 

Manjula Shetty enlightened the students that change is not only needed in society, but also in mind-set of the men in society. There are differences in mindsets, thinking of men, society, human beings, etc.

 

The second session was on Gender Equity by Antony T P, associate professor of department of political science, Government First Grade College, Punjalakatte.

 

Antony T P also spoke on issue of Gender Bias for women in work place. He also spoke on sexual harassment of women in work place in all sectors. He also added that women at their work place face a lot of problems. 

 

Umesh, sub-inspector and Mohammad Mansoor, assistant sub-inspector of Kavoor police station enlightened the students on the topic Women Laws and Need for Awareness, in the afternoon during the third session. ‘Crimes against women cannot be tackled completely by law alone. Cooperation of individuals, police and other officials concerned is necessary,’" said sub-inspector Umesh.

 

Assistant sub-inspector Mansoor encouraged every woman to rise, shine and set an example in the society. While interacting with the audience, he mentioned that there are laws, but they are not implemented.

 
NSS programme officer Poornima M welcomed the gathering.  Seema, compered the Inaugural Programme. Women’s Cell co-ordinator Suvarnamalini B proposed vote of thanks.

The associate professor Shashikala K, department of commerce, Government First Grade College, Haleyangady was the chief guest of the occasion.

 

Shashikala K distributed certificates to all the participants of different colleges at the occasion.

 

Nishmitha Shetty, student of Govinda Dasa College, Suratkal and Suhana Banu of University College, Hampankatta, shared their views of the workshop.

 

Avitha Maria Quadras, Co-ordinator of women’s Cell welcomed the gathering.  Sahana Shetty, lecturer, department of commerce, proposed the vote of thanks. Rakshitha compered the programme.
