Mangalore, 06 Mar 2013: Spandana Trust celebrated International Women’s Day at Infant Mary’s Convent, Jeppu, here on Tuesday March 5.
Professor Anasuya Kamath inaugurated the programme here on Tuesday morning. Speaking on the occasion, Anasuya said that women empowerment is the need of the hour to fight against rape, abuse and harassment. Education is the strongest weapon to stop violence on women. No one can steal the wealth of knowledge. Education makes the women strong to fight against all kinds of violence, especially domestic violence, said Professor Anasuya..
Professor Anasuya also thanked Spandana for encouraging her in reaching such stature in life. She said that whatever she is today it is because of Spandana which encouraged and helped in her studies.
The principal Sr Tulia Pais presided the programme.Speaking on the occasion, the lawyer Rekha Shetty questioned, ‘Why do we always talk about violence on women? Why there is always assault on women?’ Rekha also thanked Spandana for encouraging her all through her studies and reach this stature in life.
Further giving an example of a woman who is in the field of Media doing her duty very efficiently, one day when she had gone to a programme, she heard some men saying ‘Oh this lady has no other work to do, why she is here?’ She further said that photography is a male dominated profession and when a woman does this, most of the men feel insecure and uncomfortable. Their thinking is that women should sit inside the four walls and do house work, serve their husbands and take care of the children.
‘When a woman goes out and works, most men feel uncomfortable, we need more women to come out from the four walls and get into the profession they are interested in. We women are very good in maintaining the house, working outside and serving the family members without any complaints. But most men are ready to point out even a small mistake made by women,’ opined Rekha.
The variety cultural shows were staged by the women on the occasion. Sr Evangeline of Infant Mary’s Convent welcomed the gathering.
