Udupi, 04 Mar 2013:  The series of thefts and burglaries in the past few months in the neighborhoods’ of Moodubelle near here indeed is a cause of worry.  Several cases of housebreaks, cable thefts, household robberies, chain snatching and petty crimes are registered in Shirva police stations in the past six months.

There have been cases of burglars breaking-off locked houses and decamping with valuables and jewelleries.  The offender target houses, pedestrians, especially girls and elderly women.  Most of the houses that are located besides the roads were frequently targeted by burglars.  Chain and vanity bag snatching of unwary women are on the rise by the culprits who accost their victims in the guise of asking directions for a specific location.

The menace of car thefts were somewhat curbed owing to safety measures taken by car owners to a certain extent.

The timber mafia that thrived in the past in Moodubelle, abruptly fell silent as the locality has no more sandalwood trees left.  The mafia used to identify the trees in different households during the day and arrive with electric saw, fell the tree and transports the same through the night.  The owner will get to see only the chopped trunk above the ground the following morning.

The burglars have been targeting houses of wealthy that are locked for long time and houses inhabited by elderly women.  The lures for easy money and youth with a taste for luxurious living are involved in such heinous crimes, while the police department shirks its responsibility with the excuse of shortage of personnel.

The sleuths had not solved majority of cases except a burglary case in Padubelle and a case of cable theft swiftly.   The night patrols by policemen in Moodubelle are the minimal also helps the burglars to flee with booty in darkness.

However, the existing situation stresses the need of every individual to be on alert in securing their assets and belongings. One has to secure premises to protect them from any kind of thefts and not to leave any valuables in unattended homes.  The citizens should also make suitable safety arrangements, in case the home is likely to be unattended for longer duration.
