Udupi: Strengthen Democracy by respecting fundamental rights- Muzafar Assadi

Shirva, 20 Feb 2013: A national symposium on “Equal distribution of opportunities in a democracy” was organised at St Mary’s college Shirva. Dr Muzafar Hussain Assadi, head of the department of Political Science, Mysore University was the chief guest. He, in his address, opined that after independence, India adopted democracy but to make it work India did not have proper social set up or preparedness. Even after 60 years of independence the system is not completely absorbed.
Most of the Indian communities have not yet experienced the power of human rights and opportunities in democratic India. The dream of every Indian to have a just livelihood and equal opportunities has not yet been realised. The inflow of foreign investments has further complicated the situation. We have to seriously uphold and implement the human rights and that is a challenge for us, he further said.
Dr Clarence Miranda, principal of the college, in his presidential address, said that the symposium has highlighted the multi-faceted problems facing Indian democracy and gave an insight into how to solve them. The president of the political science department Prof. Gurudev in his speech said that democracy should be built on pillars of independence, equality and brotherhood which will help in building a society with equal opportunities to all the communities.
Representatives Ashok Bhandary and Lata Pundit put forward their views on the subject. Programme director Dr Padmanabha Bhat welcomed the gathering. Prof. Subramanya B. compeered and Prof. Ronald Moras proposed vote of thanks.
