Udupi, 24 Jan 2013: Swami Vishveshwarateerta of Pejavar mutt on Wednesday January 23, opposed the naming of Tipu Sultan for the proposed university at Srirangapattana. He suggested the names of Bhakta Kabeer, Shishunala Sharifa, Moulana Azad or Abdul Kalam.
‘India is a secular country. It is improper to give special significance to a community, while naming a university. The national constitution guarantees equality among majority and minority, hence giving more importance to a community is not justified, urged Swami Vishveshwarateerta.
It is owing to several people seeking the opinion of Swami Vishveshwarateerta on the controversy in naming Tipu Sultan for the proposed university at Srirangapattana; Swami Vishveshwarateerta issued a media release in this regard, expressing his views.
‘I have great respect for Muslim leaders and community in India. I have attended their several programmes, wherein I have been accorded warm welcome. It’s owing to a few terrorists, the entire Muslim community is disgraced, said Swami Vishveshwarateerta. Swami Vishveshwarateerta assured that he loves the majority of Muslims who believe in God and are patriots, stressed Swami Vishveshwarateerta.
Meanwhile, Swami Vishveshwarateerta emphasized that the proposed university should be named in honour of an uncontroversial great Indian acceptable to all.
