Udupi: Teenager dies in bus, friend battles for life in hospital

Udupi, 28 Nov 2012: A 17-year-old girl, found in a serious condition on a private bus at Kundapur, died on the way to the hospital on Wednesday. The youth, identified as Manjunatha (21), who was also in a similar condition beside her, is being treated at Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore.

 

The girl, Lavanya (name changed) and the youth are from Gollahalli of Chikkaballapur district. Kundapur police said at the last stop the cleaner had gone to check for passengers and found Manjunatha in a bad condition on the last row. While helping him out, the cleaner saw the girl and informed the police after he got suspicious. The girl died on the way to the hospital. Police said they found sedative pills and empty tin can of aluminium phosphide, a fumigant, near them. Based on the college ID found in their bags, their identity was established.

 

Manjunatha was shifted to Wenlock Hospital here after administering first aid. Wenlock Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr P Kishori said: Manjunatha has consumed poison. We have sent his stomach wash samples for forensic examination. The condition of the victim is very serious.

 

Police said the booking was done online and the duo had boarded the bus at Nelamangala. When TOI called the cell number provided by the police found on the victim, the receiver of the call identified himself as Gopal, father of girl. He said his daughter was a PU student at Gollahalli and claimed that Manjunatha had left studies a few years back and was working at a medical shop. Gopal said he was not aware of the relationship between his daughter and Manjunatha. The girl’s kin are expected to reach Kundapur late tonight.
