Udupi: Agricultural workers gherao Taluk Panchayats demanding land for housing

Udupi, 06 Nov 2012: Karnataka State Unit of All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) organized demonstrations and gherao to Taluk offices all over Karnataka including in Udupi and Kundapura on Monday, November 5, 2012 demanding allotment of land for housing by the government.
Since the past two years, there has been continuous struggle at the village, Taluk and District levels which included submission of applications to the respective authorities for allotting land for housing to the agricultural workers. However, so far the government has not responded favourably to these demands. This was stated by CITU state leader Nityananda Swamy.
At Kundapura hundreds of agricultural workers took out procession from Shastri Circle to Kundapura Taluk Panchayat at 10 am. Following the gherao of the Taluk office an appeal was submitted to the Tahshildar requesting him to send it to the state government.
At Udupi, agricultural workers and landless peasants assembled at the Service Bus Stand at 2 pm and took out morcha to the Udupi Taluk Panchayat office and gheraoed the Taluk office. The protestors even tried to block the road. However, the police swung into action and detained a number of protestors who were later released.
The protest was organized under the CITU leaders Vishwanatha Rai, K. Shankar, Doghu Suvarna, H. Vittala, Sayra, Mumtaz, Umesh Kunder, Lakshmana and others.
