Udupi, 26 September 2012: It is almost a year since the Udupi – Chickmagalur by-election was conducted. A few days before that election an unexpected tragic incident took place. Taking up this issue leaders of all the political parties of the district gave press conference, statements, anti-statements, huge protests, urged COD enquiry and what not. The purpose behind all these was just to grab the vote bank emotionally!

But once the election is over the leaders forgot this tragic incident and it is going to be a year now.

Prathvi Amparu who won the gold medal at national level and had the every potential for winning the medal at international level killed herself by hanging to the ceiling fan of her hostel room of Brahmavara S.M.S. College where she was studying her PUC studies.

But more than this tragedy, is the tragedy that the politicians used this incident as an issue for their election vote bank. Because after the election, forget about the protest, at least this Prathvi would not have been forgotten like this to those politicians!

A year ago a talented rural sports woman who was blossoming at national level lost her life in a most unfortunate way. Prathvi Amparu, a javelin thrower and the 2nd year P.U.C. student of S.M.S. College Brahmavara Udupi Taluk, had killed herself. In the Mysore zone Dasara sports meet held in Mandya she won Silver medal in javelin throw and Bronze medal in high jump and had just returned back.

Upon coming to her college hostel, she distributed sweets to her classmates and showed them the medals she had won in the sports competition and was happy. Even she sang songs and danced with her classmates. At noon she called her home and informed her parents about her winning the medals in the tournament.

At that time her roommate had gone to wash cloths, while she came back in the afternoon the room door was closed. Later other girls also came and when they pushed the door, they saw that Prathvi has hanged herself to the fan with the wale of churidar. Immediately she was taken down and admitted to the hospital. There the doctors confirmed that she is dead.

The reason for her suicide was not immediately known. The then Udupi SP Dr. Ravikumar said that she must have killed herself due to depression, but the reason for her depression was yet to be known at that time.

Prathvi was the daughter of Shekara Poojary a poor labourer from Amparu, Kundapura Taluk. While she was in the High School itself, without any sports gear or training she had won medals in state level sports competitions. With this achievement, in coordination of Brahmavara Sports Club she was provided free education, hostel and scholarship in S.M.S. College. She won silver medal in the javelin throw in the previous year in the national level sports competitions held in Bhopal.

There were rumors that she had fallen in a love affair with a youth and with despair she has committed suicide. There are also rumors at that time that, for this reason the police have taken her mobile and also have arrested a youth and are conducting the investigation. But the police had not confirmed on these roumers at that time.

There are many rumours and assumptions behind the death of Prathvi. Even today the complete reasons of her death has not come to light. The investigation has taken place. Atleast now after one year the list of the accused will be submitted to the court.

Bowing to the protests and urge of the politicians on those days the Kundapura DySP Ram Nivas Sepat had conducted special enquiry. He has given a report and according to it the calls of the mobile phone of Prathvi has been explored. Her dairy has been verified. All these point finger at a youth by name Misban Husain of Brahmavara. He was arrested and later released on bail.

The investigation in the district court will be conducted in the coming days, but for the verdict it might take couple of years more. By that time Prathvi will be forgotten by the Politicians and even by the public. Only time can tell whether Prathvi and her family will get the justice.

Kundapura DySP has given a report on this incident. It took some long time to confirm certain facts. In the death note Prathvi wrote before her death she had written that Misban Husain was harassing her to love him. The case is registered and the investigation is undertaken and in some days the charge sheet will be submiktted to the honourable court, said Udupi SP Dr. Boralingayya M.B.
