Udupi: City Brace up for Krishna Janmastami celebrations

Udupi, 07 Sept 2012: The city has plunged into preparatory mood for the coming Krishna Janmastami and Ganesh Chathurthi festivals with the streets getting filled with flower vendors. This year Krishna Janmastami will be celebrated on Saturday September 8 and Mosaru Kudike on Sunday September 9.

 
 
In various streets in Car Street wearing gorgeous look with flower vendors have already descended the city. A certain type of leaf known as Kedige in Kannada in which idli batter is filled into moulds made out of these leafs adds a unique savor and aroma to the dish. People have thrown themselves in competition to procure these leafs to make their festival a complete one. The leafs are usually collected from faraway places from the city. Once the leafs are collected they are soaked in water for about five to six hours. Only then moulds can be prepared out of these leafs. They are then brought to the city markets to get better prices.

 

 

Flower vendors with the colorful and beautiful flowers seem to have decorated the streets in the city. On Friday September 7, good number of customers thronged the flower markets. They had less option to engage in bargain as during the season time, no vendors reduce the price.

 
Krishna Janmastami, is an annual commemoration of the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is also to be noted that while worshipping any other gods, a person’s devotional feel gets charged, while when one hears the name of Lord Krishna, his or her heart opens for love. Hence Lord Krishna is more loved and admired by the people rather than devoted. This festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the month ‘Shravana’ in the Hindu calendar.

 
In Krishna temple various religious activities are taking place. Tens of teams are getting ready for traditional Huli Vesha competirion. Also there are various other competions like fancy dress, fruits eating competition. Thousands of people expected to participate in this famous Vitla Pindi programme.
